***What Are You Smoking, December 2025?***

Briar Works Country Lawyer in an El Morjane Algerian billiard. A bit underwhelmed by this blend. I'll give it some air time and try it again.

Did Half & Half Change, Too?

Couldn't get into it. Too wet and smells like Play Dough.

    SP C&D 20% sale started

I can't be bothered to chase blends that aren't readily obtainable. It's the digital equivalent of mall shoppers punching each other for the last iPhone on Black Friday.

    Who's Still Enjoying Churchwardens?

I have a Mr. Brog No.15 that I smoke from time to time. Not a bad pipe.

    Understanding Moisture

Air humidity will definitely have an effect on the smoke. Smoking a briar outside on a very humid day, especially if it's chilly out, often results in gurgling. For that reason, I prefer a cob in those conditions.

Corn Cobs - what’s the skinny?

Never had any gurgle with a cob. When I'm smoking on a cold, wet day, I default to a cob because they never gurgle for me like a briar might. Has it been modified, bottom of the chamber filled in with pipe mud or anything like that?

McConnell Red Virginia in a Ropp J06. My go-to smoke lately.

    Burley Blend (No-name yet)

I tried making my own aromatic using a stoved VA base and a sauce very similar to this - bourbon, real vanilla extract, and a touch of white sugar. Result was pretty good. I might experiment and try stoving it after adding the sauce rather than before.

Ends of the Bowls Getting Acrid

Sounds like moisture and other gunk collecting in the bottom. The dottle at the bottom is unsmoked tobacco that soaks all this other crap up, and yeah, it can taste pretty gross sometimes. If it tastes bad, I toss it. The other option which I frequently recommend, similar to the idea of using...

    Amphora Pouches in Canada

Not sure about Canada market Amphora pouches in particular, but not all pouches have a seal, none of them are totally airtight. Most plastic pouches I've encountered don't have a seal, but some of the foil/mylar type pouches do have an adhesive seal. Would not trust it for long term storage...

    Cornell and Diehl blends

The Burley flakes are very underappreciated, especially #3.

Question About Sillem’s Mayor 1814 Flake – Is It Lightly Flavored or Pure Virginia?

To me it is, regardless of whether GH call it one.

Question About Sillem’s Mayor 1814 Flake – Is It Lightly Flavored or Pure Virginia?

Then you have a blend that has had enough sugar added that it becomes perceptibly sweet. Whether or not that constitutes an aromatic or not is up to the individual smoker. I guess some people don't care, and it's really not all that important. I just like to dedicate some of my pipes to what I...

Question About Sillem’s Mayor 1814 Flake – Is It Lightly Flavored or Pure Virginia?

It's a debate over definitions, and there is no consensus on what constitutes an aromatic or non-aromatic. Sugar casing being fairly neutral, it is frequently used on "non-aromatics" for the improvements it makes to the smoking characteristics. Any added flavor beyond that, in my humblest of...
