I used to do this, until my friends figured out when they came over what I was loading into their pipes.

I scrap mine out into an ash bucket. I usually wait until it gets about 2 pounds of scrap in the bucket and then toss it onto a fire.
In previous years, I would add the left over dottle into the water bucket that I would soak my firewood in before using it in the BBQ pit.

However, I do have a jar that receives the bits of tobacco that didn’t get filled in my pipes. I’m pretty good at eyeballing how much tobacco will fit in a chamber, so there isn’t always some to put in the jar apart from some dust, but I figure it’ll be an interesting smoke at some point in time.
Now this is an idea I could get behind...

I don’t save dottle from the bottom of a smoked pipe. However, I do have a jar that receives the bits of tobacco that didn’t get filled in my pipes. I keep a shot glass next to my desk for the same purpose. Sometimes I’ll rub out a bit too much of something and I’ll throw the extras into the shot glass rather than back into the tin. One benefit is that the scraps get really dry and make great kindling. I try to put them to use before I accumulate too much, though. puffy

I tend to fill the very bottom of the bowl with some cheap, less desirable tobacco to act as sacrificial dottle so I don't waste any of my more expensive blend.
This is genius. Any flavor detected from the sacrificial tobacco? This would be a great use for this tub of Carter hall i am never gonna smoke through.

I use some dry, bland, non-aromatic tobacco for this, so no, it doesn't change the flavor. It's important for it to be dry so it can absorb the moisture like a sponge, so it serves more than one purpose. I have some shag cut Ohm Natural RYO stuff I've been using. Works great.

I'm curious if you're planning on smoking the dottle. Personally, I wouldn't.

I don't have much dottle to speak of. I tend to fill the very bottom of the bowl with some cheap, less desirable tobacco to act as sacrificial dottle so I don't waste any of my more expensive blend. It does a good job of soaking up the moisture. It gets tossed out, and none of my more expensive baccy is wasted.
Aha! A perfect use for the Thuoc Lao Vietnamese sotweed I'm trying to use up whilst ingesting as little of it as possible. Thank'ee, Mr. Lumbridge :)
