One Pound in a Ball Jar

What size Ball Jar will hold a pound of ribbon cut? I knew the answer at one time, now…not so much. Is it one quart?

I prefer glass to Mylar for tobaccos that get delved into more frequently. The zip seals tend to leak and/or fail with repeated use.

It depends. Wet blends require less space.

A pound of your OHM divorce sale tobacco will take up 3 times as much jar space as a pound of Captain black would.

I can get 3-4oz in a half pint jar, so maybe a quart with some change left over. Use the caulk gun.

One pound of Pegasus filled 3 quart jars. I didn't pack it very tightly.

You'll need a 64-oz. Mason jar. I estimate what I need by multiplying the # ounces of the blend by 4. Two ounces of tobacco fits nicely inside an 8-oz. Mason. You can usually cram a little more in. I don't try to greatly compress the tobacco when filling a jar.

I find 4x usually works well. I usually buy amber coloured jars from North Mountain. They make 9 oz. jars that work very well for 2 oz. tins—that extra ounce gives you some wiggle room. For quart sized amber jars, I usually order what’s available on Amazon at the best price; sometimes you get eight jars, sometimes six. It just depends on what is in stock at a decent price.

North Mountain is great for glass products, I use their clear 750 ml bottles for whiskies I’ve aged in my Paglione Oak Bottles.

64 ounce has enough room for a pound+ if you jam pack it. Then top it with a nice 120$ bottle of bourbon. Just pour it on in!

Along with this question … do y’all tend to pack it in tight or lose to breathe? I always assumed pack it to “marry the flavors”, but perhaps there’s a reason it’s ribbon and not flake or plug….

If I buy a pound, I usually make sure I have at least two 1 quart jars. But I've also ended up needing up to four. So.... 4!

This is a question that can go around for ages, especially in regards to aging but since you’re most likely going to be opening the jar to smoke from regularly, I wouldn’t over think it and do what’s most comfortable.

You’d also be surprised how well some of the paint can lids seal..,

I go with two 32 oz jars...but mostly because the way I smoke. It would take me about 6mo-1yr to smoke through 8oz of 1 specific blend.

Last ribbon I packed away I think was 1 lb of Boswell's Northwoods.

You could smoke in style. You wouldn't even have to do any of the work as the machine would do the breathing for you.

I’d say that’s about right from my experience.
