Hello Friends,

I am fairly new to smoking and have just bought my first pipe.

I think I am getting into it because I enjoy the reflective/spiritual element of smoking..

But am also wondering if I have not already developed a slight nicotine dependance and am just covering that up.. until now I have only smoked cigars occasionally but was convinced by a cigar store owner that pipe smoking is a similar thing and is overall more affordable and is natural/mostly orally inhaled etc..

I have no illusions about smoking being generally bad for your physical health but..

I guess what I am wondering is this:

How much is too much?

Would you recommend even starting smoking to your younger self? Is it possible to make this purely a casual thing? Once a day? A few times a week or month maybe? I am currently 30 years old.

I know addiction is person dependant, and I’ve seen many similar questions online on this topic, but I wanted to get some more support on this before I smoke more.. as well as more thoughts and insights..

I seriously do like it as a “me thing” and how it gets me outside and reflecting, slowing day amidst this busy world etc.. it also makes me feel connected to god or spirit, and our ancestors who have smoked for thousands of years and would hope to almost make this a form of spiritual practice/quiet reflection/me time.

I would warmly welcome your thoughts, and honest opinions, thank you all and happy smoking,

Paul.

Long ago I was a cigarette smoker, and very much addicted, so I know exactly what that feels like. My pipe-smoking rate is very light, about 3-5 bowls a week, and it’s been like that for years. For various reasons I will regularly go a few days or a week without smoking at all. I suppose that any regular nicotine use is habit-forming, but at this level it’s below my threshold of noticing it at all. Obviously, increased smoking rates could significantly alter that equation.

Some people can start and stop the daily and regular consumption of coffee with no adverse effects. Others get symptoms such as headaches.
One is not addicted, the other is, in the physical / physiological sense, addicted.
Caffeine is likely the most consumed drug in America...
If you can start and stop the consumption of pipe tobacco without any physical or physiological alterations - you're not addicted.

i can smoke everyday then not for weeks, I’ve never been addicted to pipes and cigars even the high nic stuff, when these threads come up, many will say the same. I heard a running theory that there are addictive additives in cigarettes, wouldn’t surprise me over 500 chemicals are legally allowed to be added, they probably slip something in…. Or something that makes the nicotine more addictive, a booster.
