My Missouri Meerschaum Complaint
The cobs I smoked years ago had to be beat down.... Meaning they all had a "Production Issue" like shellac, paint, varnish, plaster of paris or some sort of crap that had to be smoked out. Just smoke your pipe a few times and whatever it is will go away..... The newer pipes don't have that... -

It Was Bound To Happen....!
I've had pipes around me since '72 and bought my first meerschaum in '75. I may have around 140 or so now... and I've always been a stickler for being easy with them and having a good place to set them down. OCD... I have to have my surroundings just right before I even take a pipe out of it's... -

Excellent Pipe...! It's a pre-mid 70's pipe. Lots of pipes were made in Vienna before the exportation of meerschaum was banned in Turkey about that time. Your pipe doesn't appear to be beaten up or scratched. What A Great Deal!- topd

I used to have a problem with burning the rim, but only with a butane type lighter, so haven't used one in years. I use kitchen, strike on box matches inside and a Zippo wick type lighter outside.
