Great find. It's seldom that anyone can find a pre-70's pipe that's un-smoked. I've not heard of your 'lick test' in quit that way though. I think the best test on an older pipe is to touch a bit of moisture to the pipe (under the stem in case it leaves a small mark) and see if it's absorbed. A...- topd

How much would you pay for an estate pipe?
When I buy a used car or truck, I look at the "Blue Book" and see what's it's value is, with the thought that I'll be selling it at some future date. Meer cleaning questions?
How about a photo of your tenon type. I'm familiar with several and yours may need it's hole drilled a bit larger as drwatson suggests. In the 60's and 70's most pipes were drilled to accept the tenon screwed directly into the meerschaum. On some, the tenon is made of some hard material other...- topd

A Litte More About Meerschaums....
Good deal guys... One thing I forgot to deal with that I meant to. How to tell a block from a pressed pipe. You've all heard (put some saliva on it) or (rub it on your chin).... HaHaaaa I also heard one time to rub it on nylon... None of these work. You'll just have to learn from experience...- topd

Hey shorty... The only thing I do differently with my meerschaums than with my cobs or briers is to thoroughly wash my hands before handling them... I only have one pipe that I've ever added bee's wax to as an experiment. I don't set them down on/in anything but the case that was made for them...- topd
