    Nording rusticated freehand colouring

Great lookin' pipe plank! I have several 'unfinished' briers, and they seem to take on color that is as pleasing to me as watching a meerschaum color over time. I believe it's from the tobacco, but some could be from oils in our hands...

    Pipe In The Bath?

I always shower except for when I have bath tub company! Even after 41 years we still like to relax with some wine(her's)/ beer(mine), she lights her candles, I lite my pipe, some slow bellie rubbin' music and the fireplace waiting.... (I've never had condensation issues, but I smoke out on the...

    Burning virgin briar

More than likely, your not going to burn a new bowl unless it has a defect. Of course it'll char some and begin to build your carbon cake. Just choose the tobacco you like, smoke it and don't worry about it. I don't stuff a rag or paper towel in the bowl and twist. This will damage your newly...

    The Briar's Good, But...

I like a cob when I'm working with my hands. Can clench it all day because of it's lightness and never worry about it much. My cobs almost just smoke themselves....

    Don't Fear the Meer

Most of the comments above are true about Turkish Meerschaum. I smoke and handle mine just as you would a cob or brier, except I insure my hands are dry and clean. Dirty, oily hands will stain a pipe. Blowing smoke on the outside of the bowl will do nothing to speed-up the coloring process at...

Not So Easy: Designating Pipe Shapes and Tobacco Blend Types

I can’t tell you how many friendly arguments I’ve had over the ingredient “Oriental”. I just usually say, “Well, let me try a bowl!” Your insight is always an education Russ, Thanks!

Have Had My Hands Full..... (Pic Heavy!)

warren: I don't plan on a tail vice on the bench, but I am installing a leg vice. Of course, I may change my mind later after using it. pipebow88: I'm not in Texas, but some of my kids are. I'm in South West Arkansas, just south of Magnolia. I appreciate the compliments, but my woodworking...

Tobacco Too Dry? Wait A Minute.

Good advice mso489. I like my flake tobacco's on the extremely dry side.... I usually open a tin and let it dry overnight, then lay the top on lightly and let her go a couple more days.

    Sanding Staining and Smoking Properties

I am by no means a pipe maker but have refinished a few briers with results that I was pleased with for my own use. I have sanded down with 600 paper and prefer no stain at all. I've used Johnson's furniture wax, renaissance wax (used by museums to refurbish wooden antiques) and carnauba wax...

    965 question

I've had good and bad experiences buying tobacco that usually comes by the tin in bulk. Mostly good, but I suspect the two times I was disappointed came from a jar marked as a well known that was maybe close, but no cigar (pun intended). Both times was at a small B&M. I wont say where because...

Have Had My Hands Full..... (Pic Heavy!)

I know this isn't a woodworking site, but several pipers mentioned they didn't work with tools much. I thought I'd invite everyone to pitch-in if you want with tips and/or photo's having to do with that subject. Don't feel like your 'bombing' my post, your invited! This is a saw I've had for...

Mac Baren HH Old Dark Fired: Review with Great Information

An absolutely wonderful smoke that has become one of my favorites... I was concerned a year ago or so when there was a shortage but I've stored about 30 tins in my cellar since it's become more available. I had never read a review on ODF before and was surprised to learn it didn't have Latakia...
