My first pipe purchased in 1972.... I bought it because I didn't know anything about pipe smoking, but it was just different. It's actually a very poor shape for tamping, and just a bad design all around. (You can't see from the small photo, but the bowl is oval shaped.)- topd

My Meerschaums
Two of my Baki pipes.... I've been smoking these for about a year now. -
New Altinok Meerschaum
I've had a pipe or two that had a stem that wasn't quit right or felt a bit thick in my teeth. If I was happy with the rest of the pipe (and yours looks like it's coloring beautifully) I didn't send it back. I get some sand paper type nail files, with medium and fine sides and go to work on it...- topd

Vintage Bourbon Bottle Identification?
I'm with beefeater... The bad thing about whiskey is that it's done aging once it's removed from the barrel and bottled. It doesn't continue to age like a wine does. Seeings how the seal is broken, I'd drink it!- topd

BBB Calabash - Meerschaum? Asbestos?
This could be a standard calabash from that era, gourd body holding a meerschaum bowl under the silver cap... Ream the inside of the bowl some and see if it isn't just meerschaum. Let us know....- topd

Refinishing A Meerschaum Pipe?
I've never tried to refinish a meerschaum and would cringe at the idea of trying. But I don't think I'd use a buffing wheel at all. It seams to me the buffing compound would be impregnated into the pores of the pipe. I read some years ago that the meerschaum pipe makes use some kind of abrasive...- topd
