    Mixing Tobaccos

Here's two I've come up with on my own: -- I add 1 part Prince Albert to 2 parts John Bull--it enhances the burley taste. -- To Match Revelation I add 10% Perique, i.e. 9 parts Revelation, 1 part Perique. The blend already has Perique, but not enough for my taste sometimes.

Any News on Warning Labels in the US?

I don't buy them for the tin either. However a lot of people collect tobacco tins, and the warning just ruins the art work of a tin. Even a plain tin has a certain aesthetic, and the ubiquitous warning labels ruins that.

Any News on Warning Labels in the US?

From what I've seen the limited batch tins seem to be exempt from the warning. And some of the imported tobaccos, such as Peterson. But some imports have them, like a Mac Baren tin I recently got. Confusing to me.

Any News on Warning Labels in the US?

Several months ago a US federal judge ruled that the FDA requirement of warning labels on cigars was unconstitutional since they had no valid reason to require them (I'm paraphrasing and may be a bit off). Has anyone heard if this will apply to pipe tobacco? Can we look forward to normal...

    Sutliff Match: Briggs

Sorry I only now saw your post months later. I'm in southern Missouri. It's not much of a homestead as I've slowed down due to arthritis. I still have honey bees and chickens for eggs. I used to have a decent garden but haven't done that for a couple of years.

Need Recommendations for Virginia or VaPer with Rum

Thanks for all the suggestions. I've added Robert McConnell Scottish Flake, Dan Tobacco Salty Dogs, and Fribourg & Treyer Brown Flake to my order. Looking forward to trying them, and some of the other suggestions as well.

Need Recommendations for Virginia or VaPer with Rum

Yesterday I revisited a tin of Murray's 1921 Cunningham I first smoked new last year. It's Virginia flake with some Perique and rum topping. It is really good, but not widely available. I'll probably buy more, but I'm also looking for recommendations of something similar, either tin or bulk...

    How Thrifty Can You Be

Buy when on sale. I'm well stocked on Cult Blood Red Moon and the average price I paid is less than $7 a tin--I got several for $6. Do an internet search for blends you like. You may find a new, cheaper source. One of my favorite blends is John Bull, and it can be a little hard to find...

If You Love Plum Pudding You'll Also Love.... ?

I second the Potlatch recommendation. Plum Pudding was the first blend of SPC I tried. I've tried Potlatch and really like it. Deception Pass is good too but not similar. There are still some more SPC blends I'd like to try.

Mixture 79 VS Half and Half

I've had both, though it's been awhile since I've had the Mixture 79. I remember Mixture 79 as just another burley blend. Half and Half tastes unique to me--I get a distinct corn taste. It is flavored with cardamom, coriander and maze, according to Tobacco Reviews. Sometimes I'll get in the...

Steve "PipeStud" Fallon on Radio Show of May 26, 2020

I thought it was a good point about companies using an excellent tobacco in a given blend, but then not able to access that same source in subsequent years. Makes me think quality tobacco is like wine, in that there are good vintages and bad. Another challenge when cellaring tobacco.

It Isn’t Just Surepost Having Issues

I'm having trouble with the USPS. My mail goes through Kansas City and it takes a week for packages to travel the less than 200 miles from there to my home. The current one I'm waiting on made it from New York to Kansas City, Missouri in two days--good time. Then it goes to Kansas City...

    Changing Tastes And Capriciousness

My tastes have changed as I improve my smoking technique and discover more tobaccos. I started on aros, then burley was my thing for awhile. Now It's mostly English and some Balkan.

Looking for Burley-Forward Blends with Very Little Latakia.

Two of my favorites that might fill the bill are John Bull and Super Value English Mixture. Don't let the brand fool you for the Super Value, check out the reviews.

US Court of Appeals Unanimously Strikes Down Warning Labels

Hope they get the stupid warnings off the front of the tins at least. My experience as a pipe-only smoker is that the nicotine in pipe tobacco is not addictive. I never crave a pipe the way I've seen cigarette smokers crave their cigarettes. Pipe tobacco is fundamentally different from...

    John Bull

I got lucky in that this was part of a sampler of pouch tobaccos I ordered. I really like it and it is a regular in my rotation. For me this seems to be a burley-forward blend, as that is the predominant flavor I get--nutty like a lot of burley blends. Like others say, it's not heavy on the...

Is Pipe Smoking Something That Grows on You?

I suppose it grew on me as I learned the proper technique. I quit a couple of times over the years but was always drawn back to it. For a long time I only smoked aromatics. I smoked too fast and the flavor quickly faded, leaving only a nasty ash taste. Smoking slowly and searching out the...

***What Are You Smoking, July 2020?***

Always a variety, but my newest discovery is Seattle Pipe Club's Deception Pass. Virginia, Perique, and Turkish tobaccos. It was alright fresh out of the tin, but after a week or so of getting some air, it is really good.

    Rattray's Has A Good Idea

I wish they all did this. I enjoy the tin art and those warnings just ruin it.
