    What Have I Got?

Yes, that apple juice-colored stem could be amber or Bakelite, but I'm betting on amber. Gorgeous pipe, I'd be over-the-moon if I found that for, say, forty dollars.

    Mastercraft Meerschaum Pipe Question

Mastercraft block meerschaums were, I believe, made by Andreas Bauer in Austria. The lattice ones have Bauer's very distinctive long lattice, and many had amber stems. I'm not sure if these are just pre- or just post-WWII. Yours would be a meerschaum-lined briar, a very different animal.

    Backpacker's Churchwarden

I, too, would take a corncob. You could get a regular-length stem and a churchwarden stem, smoke short while hiking, smoke long while camping.

Replacement Meerschaum Insert Bowls for a Gourd Calabash? Looking to Have One Made.

I have a Pioneer gourd calabash. Its bowl, which had tiny cracks when I got it, finally fell apart. I've glued it back together in order to take measurements. I have a very specific hope for it: I'd like a bowl that's lattice-carved. Like the Kirsten bowl pictured, which was made new. Its...

    The Smoke

Yep. The Pipe was in more traditional shapes. The Smoke was in shapes that, in my opinion, were designed to appeal to the hip college kids. Venturi was the name used for the later all-resin pipes. Complete history here: Billie W. Taylor II, Ph.D. the pipe history -...

    Questions on Meerschaum

Yeah, I'm quite sure that was a joke. Yours is carved in the shape of the "calabash" pipes, which have a meerschaum or clay bowl set into a body made from an African gourd, but yours is all-meerschaum. The carving is the Turkish-created "lattice" style. It's a lovely no-name 1970s meerschaum...

Horn Stems and Bone Stems. How Do You Know the Difference?

Yes, yours has a lovely horn stem. Bone is always white or off-white, and feels rock-hard to the teeth. As in, it makes lucite seem like rubber by comparison. The only stems I know to have been made entirely from bone, at least on commercial pipes, were early Missouri Meerschaums and other...

    Cob Love…Yes Please! ? 11/30/21

Mostly old ones. On the left, a 1930s "Radio," a burnished Tibbes No. 2 1/2, burnished 1960s Freehand w/ cob shank. Big long ones are by Phoenix-American Cob Pipe Works (left), unknown (right). Upper with fancy-turned bowl and only one bend in stem was made by Hirschl & Bendheim. Top right is a...

Info on Sugar Barrel Tobacco, Please.

Title edited -jpm My grandfather, or so I'm told, smoked somdething that's no longer made called "Sugar Barrel." I assume it was inexpensive, dime store tobacco, which would fit-- he didn't have a lot of spending money. I have a few of his pipes, and a gorgeous painted wood pipe rack of which...

    Tamper for Meerschaum

Chasingembers, I'm in love with your pipe. Congrats, it's incredible!

Look at this Beauty I Just Received.

You'll find far more vintage meerschaums with yellow stems than any other color. It's loosely in imitation of the old amber stems. 1950s-1970s meers extensively used yellow plastic, with varying degrees of marbling. As for whether or not this is block, Medico likely sold both.

    Meerschaum Already Colored but Unsmoked

Which DO you mean? No matter the question, I'd rather they ask here and get a consensus than ask Google and get twenty conflicting answers.

Anyone Heard of a Meerschaum Carver Named "Luccieanno"?

Thank you for the details! His little book is interesting. Has some typos and quirks, but it's rather cool just the same.

Anyone Heard of a Meerschaum Carver Named "Luccieanno"?

I just purchased a copy of a 1995 book, "Pappa Luccieanno's Guide to Modern Day Meerschaum Pipes." Unlike other books discussing antiques, Antion Luccieanno, it seems, was an ardent collector of both antique and Turkish meerschaums, and he wrote this book, with b/w photos, on the latter. He also...

    Cumberland Replacement Stem

Briarville has done all my meerschaum re-stemming beautifully. And yes, when looking at their price list, Cumberland will have to be custom-cut from rod stock. I've had a custom acrylic stem from them, made to imitate an amber stem with a round 'button,' but not a vulcanite stem. Everything I've...

    Meerschaum Already Colored but Unsmoked

I don't mind helping newbies. Sometimes reading Google gives you a lot of conflicting information. There's a lot of BS out there. We've got the straight skinny over here. Yes, as far as new pipes, everything you see is Turkish (the African mines are closed) and nearly all is block. Pressed or...
