    Seattle B+M.

Title edited. Please use capitals judiciously! Original: I don't know most pipe tobacco, but these are in a local shop that... Name? Do they do phone orders? ...has a lot of old stock just lying around. I've bought a few pipes I'm quite sure have been sitting there since the mid-1980s. It's...

    My Cheap No-name Meer

I see hints of translucency! I'd hold onto that for $30 and keep smoking it!

    Goodwill find.

Goodwills in my asrea, too, won't put out smoked pipes because they consider them to be "dirty."

    Merchant Service Table Pipe

Oh, I'm pretty sure some of 'em were smoking actual tobacco. The kind I'm thinking of, anyway. I'm imagining,. not a groovy swingin' pad, but... Nehru jacket, classical music on the stereo, Indian and Chinese objects in the decor, Turkish rug. And one of these table pipes, filled with some...

Couple of estate meers from site sponsor

I'd bet those are 1950s Austrian, with Bakelite stems rather than cultured amber. They should smoke well.

    An Acquisition With A Story

I love that. And it's a pretty pipe.

    Merchant Service Table Pipe

I've seen pipes like this from 1970s tobacconist's catalogs. I always pictured a very macho guy with a mustache, sitting in his 70s "pad," smoking this and thinking he looks like a Maharajah. In my opinion, they're cool.

    Interesting Two-Sided, Two-Faced Meerschaum

It does have that Bekler oddness, though it's not his. 1970s Turkish carvers did all sorts of odd stuff, and zodiacv-themed material was huge then (I'm told, by someone who met Mr. Bekler in the 80s on one of his US tours for CAO, that one of the few bits of conversational English he knew was...

    Meerschaum Lined Cobs

My question is why? The whole thing about cobs is that they smoke cool and sweet like a meerschaum.

Those wooden windcap pipes are neat.

Help! Another Mystery Pipe (Non- Briar... Asbestos?)

I agree, it's pre-colored meerschaum. I'd LOVE to have an asbestos pipe in my collection. I've seen photos of "calabestos" gourd calabashes with a pressed asbestos bowl.

    Captain Warren

I see antique meerschaums like this semi-regularly, in the quarter-bent variety with an egg-shaped outer bowl. I'm very glad to know what to properly call them, shape-wise! They look very curious to me. I don't love them or want one, but I like them in a way and I'll bet they smoke cool and dry.

    Mystery Pipe - Meerschaum?

Pocket watches are a nifty thing to collect. I'd love to find a nice silver pre-1900, key-wind pocket watch, but between the price of getting one I have reason to believe isn't broken and the cost of then having it overhauled, I think it would be above what I spent on my most expensive pipe by...

    The Paranormal?

I've had some things happen that are unexplainable to me. I can use common slang, but what they really were, I can't say. I've seen two "ghosts." Both looked like people. One simply wasn't there when I switched from peripheral to direct. The other, witnessed by two friends as well, walked past a...

Yep, jhowell has it: jojoba oil is that stellar replacement for spermaceti. Beeswax is the Turkish replacement.

    X-Rated Meerschaum

On one hand, I wondered if he got tired of carving boots. On the other, they weren't one of his limited editions (some or most of which, I think, were chosen by the company), so maybe not something he was required to make.

    Nat Sherman Cigarettes Returning?

With a company having bought the tobacco side of Nat Sherman, I understand their cigars will return under new brand names, and their pipes might come in the future. Has anybody heard about whether any of their no-additives cigarettes, especially ones like Fantasia or Black & Gold, might return...

    Block Quality

The old old carvers (European and otherwise) treated their pipes with spermaceti (whale oil), and late French carver Philippe Bargiel claimed it's the secret to making meerschaum almost a living thing. I've read about there being modern replacements. I wish I knew more about the "transparent"...

    X-Rated Meerschaum

(Beavis voice) "Boioioioioioioing!" ...this is NOT the first penis meerschaum pipe I have seen. Another I've seen has a hand caressing it. Ismet Bekler carved several series of pipes shaped like boots, with variants including turned-up toes, hobnails, holes with a toe showing, or sections that...
