    Meerschaum ID Help

I'd say made in Austria, between WWII and the 1960s (when meerschaum export was banned). It's not a Bauer or Mastercraft, but it's along those lines. Block, plastic stem (the named brands were still making amberoid then), would be worth getting the band tested in case it's gold. Nice simple...

    B&M in the Phoenix Area?

Thanks! Anyone recall which shop had the guy rolling cigars?

    B&M in the Phoenix Area?

I don't know Arizona at all. A friend has just moved to Casa Grande, is very bored andm, despite not being into pipes or smoking at all, randomly offered to scope out pipe shops for me. Is there anywhere I should send him? I'd be more interested in a wide selection of pipes than in pipe tobacco...

Information on Possible Knockoff in SIM Case

TheIronMonkey, I love those tiny 'cvollege-style' pipes! Still looking for one. Beautiful rundown by Condorlover. I concur: oxblood finish applied before it was sold. I love oxblood-dyed meers, personally, and Redmanol stems, which do imitate the very rare cherry amber.

    Super Expensive Pipes

If it fits, I have a pipe that cost me $150. I'll describe it, but I hope neither its wholesaler nor its creator are reading this thread and are upset about possible blown cover. I bought it from a shop in Seattle; it's a just-barely-bent blowfish with three knuckles of bamboo, and they had a...

You Think Your Pipe Is Ghosted? What About Haunted?

Here ya go. One cob possessed by the ghost of the seller's grandpa.

You Think Your Pipe Is Ghosted? What About Haunted?

I recall seeing an eBay auction years ago consisting of a lot of five 1950s pipes owned by the seller's deceased grandfather, who smoked them often. I still have the photo they showed, four basic briars and a cob. They said that they wondered if the pipes might be possessed by the spirit of...

    Kirsten "B"?

I have no idea what it is, but Kirsten it is not. In the 1950s and 1960s, there were perhaps hundreds of "system pipes." SmokingMetal is a website with galleries sorted by manufactorer or by type, and I don't recall seeing this there, but it's worth combing through.

    Loved, Lost, then Miraciously Found?

My "loved and lost" hasn't yet returned. I don't expect it to, but I hope to find one like it someday. I took it out with me, and when I checked my pocket after getting home from a very long day with many stops, it wasn't there any more. I have no idea how it could have come out, but apparently...

    Is this Stem Butterscotch?

Had no idea acrylic might have come in that early. So maybe the yellow plastic stems are acrylic! The Turkish stems don't have the harder feel of Bakelite.

    Cutty Pipe Thread Anyone?

My only cutty is a short (about 5") Jeantet briar. Nice heel, slightly bulbous bowl is tilted forward at about 45 degrees. Its shank has visibly been broken and glued once, very neatly. It has a very short vulcanite stem. It's next on my list to get a new stem, and I'd like about 4-5" of...

Absolutely wonderful! A lovely tribute. Will you smoke this pipe?

Are there any Modern Pipe Makers using Amber?

Finding amber large enough to use for a stem is very difficult today. Even then, if anyone makes new amber straight stems, they'll likely only be straight. Back in the late 1800s and early 1900s, there were, of course, people at pipe companies whose training was entirely in working with amber--...

    Is this Stem Butterscotch?

Yep. Just US vs. UK brand name. Acrylic was, I believe, fairly new for pipe stems in the 1970s, and didn't hit meerschaum until the 80s. Meerschaum workers stuck with yellow plastic, and the 80s brought in some tortoiseshell acrylic.

    Any Kerry Wathen Collectors?

I have this Wathen, dated 1976. It is not a "Reflection." I love it.

    Is this Stem Butterscotch?

Yes it is. However, what's pictured in the original pipe in this thread is not Bakelite. Trust me, it's just cheap yellow plastic. Bakelite has come back into use, it fell out-of-favor for decades. In the 1960s and 1970s, pipemakers were not using Bakeluite, Turkish ones or otherwise. Everything...

    Is this Stem Butterscotch?

True. Nonetheless, this is a more modern plastic than Bakelite.

    Is this Stem Butterscotch?

That's yellow plastic, not Bakelite. Most assuredly.
