Correct. I don't know any details on the pipe except that it's obviously not Turkish, and probably not post-WWII.

Wish I knew. It'd be fun to examine in-hand. I hope it smokes well!

    Thoughts On A Meer

I recall seeing these pipes in Sears and JCPenney Christmas catalogs from the 1950s on "Wishbook Web." They usually had a page of smoking stuff. These were noted as being pressed, but I just remembered these were sold as being "oil cured." I don't know what that process is like, but I've seen...

    Lost Pipe. Bleh.

I wish I knew where it could have gone, but retracing my steps isn't really possible. I was deep in conversation with a friend. Just a week or so ago, I had that silver Esquire (2nd from left at the bottom) on a walk in the woods and suddenly felt it was a lot lighter. The body had wiggled free...

    Lost Pipe. Bleh.

I collect Kirstens. I have a purpose-made display. It now has a hole in it. Thankfully, I might find a replacement eventually, thankfully it's not a one-of-a-kind item. The other two I've lost in the past, one was really irreplaceable, and it's extremely unlikely that I'll find an affordable...

The claw's case is very recent and Turkish. The pipe is not.

Yes, this pipe is pre-colored. "Vienna Meerschaum" was long slang for pressed/chip meerschaums, and I think that's what this is. Made by Strambach, Bauer or similar in the 1950s,very pretty and should smoke well.

Bought It To Be A Christmas Ornament

If I had that extremely cool-looking pipe, I'd smoke it just to see what a briar "reverse calabash" is like. I know how gourd calabashes smoke.

    Rare Caminetto?

All I know is that the thin mustache (looks like a seagull) is older, and the newer mustache is two rounded comma-shaped bits. I doubt this is old enough, but the earliest Caminettos say "Ascorti-Radice" in the stamping.

    Interesting 3 Piece Straight Pipe

Really looks like a homemade piece. Neat.

    Meer Commission

Something like 95% of new AND antique animal meerschaums I see are lacking something. I can't always pin down what. This lacks nothing to my eyes. Absolutely spectacular. Congratulations, in my opinion you got just the right carver, and I can't wait to see what else he makes for you. Which...

What Is a Pipe You Regret Not Purchasing?

Mine was a cased set of 1920s meerschaums on Marty Pulvers' site years ago. One was the last specific pipe I'm after, a shape that was all the rage with the Ivy League students from the early 1900s until the twenties: egg, full bent, square or rectangular shank, saddle stem. Usually (and in this...

    Double Sided Corn Cob

I'm not sure if MM or H&B made these, but they were made in the fifties, and were marketed ("two can smoke as cheap as one") with a now very insulting image of the supposedly skinflint Scotsman. They were one of countless novelty pipes the corn cob companies made for souvenir stands and dime...

Antique Meerschaum Depicting an Explorer Type: Who Might this Depict?

Beautiful! You need a skull pipe to smoke it from.

Antique Meerschaum Depicting an Explorer Type: Who Might this Depict?

There were still plenty of what were termed "white hunters," safari types, some of them early conservationists. And many of the people mentioned, including Livingstone and de Brazza, were well-known in the late 1800s. I suppose "explorer" is the wrong term, perhaps "adventurer" is better?

Think so, rajangan? It's quite possible, though I'd still love to attempt to identify the person.

Antique Meerschaum Depicting an Explorer Type: Who Might this Depict?

Thanks! Must be good stuff. I do smoke a pipe, but I'm not very up on tobaccos. I mostly just collect, smoking is occasional.

Antique Meerschaum Depicting an Explorer Type: Who Might this Depict?

As noted, I'm buying a cheroot holder which might be de Brazza. I'll have to look. Yes, it's possible the carver carved himself, but I'm still hoping he'll be identifiable. Can anyone tell me about the Black Frigate I see in several sigs? Sounds vaguely like an SCA thing. Friends of mine know...

Antique Meerschaum Depicting an Explorer Type: Who Might this Depict?

Could those "earrings" be part of the strap, too? I'm not finding many photos of people wearing one with the strap in place. And yes, you're right, chasingembers. "The Explorer" was not a common 'type' (common ones included The School Ma'am or Gibson Girl, the Arab or Bedouin, the Sailor, etc.)...

Antique Meerschaum Depicting an Explorer Type: Who Might this Depict?

Reading up, I wish it was him. I'm about to purchase a cheroot holder which has the same sort of cloth headdress he wears, so maybe that one could be him? Its case says it was made by the Fischers of NY, who were top-notch carvers. I suppose I should mention my source, in case anyone else wants...
