Update on the STG Closure Of Sutliff and Mac Baren

I was just thinking Mac Baren and Sutliff are probably having their best quarter in years because of this.

    To My Future Customers

There was a time (around 2010 or 2011) when Samuel Gawith used sealed foil mylar in their 250 gram boxes. It was great. Then at some point they switched to just wrapping it in a folded plastic bag.

    To My Future Customers

Wait, I thought you said in another thread the 507C is made by STG. So, assuming they keep it in the range no change in the blend is expected. I guess they could discontinue it. We will have to wait and see. But I'm hopeful that blends in the SP Top Ten lists sell well enough to warrant...

    Astley Calabash

There is a photo of a calabash on page 16 of this PDF of an Astleys catalog. Be careful not to lose that little Astley label. https://pipedia.org/images/d/dc/Astley%27s_catalogue.pdf

    Astley Calabash

Astley's was a renowned pipe shop in London for many decades located at 109 Jermyn Street. These pipes were made by high end pipe makers for the store. They are quite sought after today. I have two of them. I don't know the value of that calabash but it would depend on condition etc. You can see...

Mac Baren Dark Twist Made by Hand (video)

I agree. I think they hand loaded that tin for the camera. There must be an automated tinning line, no doubt.

Mac Baren Dark Twist Made by Hand (video)

Here is another suggesting how to load the coins into your pipe.

Mac Baren Dark Twist Made by Hand (video)

Want to see what a high quality operation Mac Baren is? Watch this quick video from Per Jensen, former master blender at the company until recently. Here we see beautiful whole leaf selected and then rolled into cakes, sliced and packaged. Enjoy. And stock up! LINK

Update on the STG Closure Of Sutliff and Mac Baren

I would guess one of the most valuable brands in the Mac Baren portfolio is Capstan. It is consistently on the SP best seller list. The association with Tolkein is gold from a marketing point of view. You see many new to the hobby eager to try Capstan because of that. Capstan was originally an...

Update on the STG Closure Of Sutliff and Mac Baren

I think STG is a small-C conservative company that does not want to take the slightest risk of breaking any international shipping rules, especially in a market so small as pipe tobacco. I noticed the other day Pipes & Cigars required an adult signature on delivery (and charged me $2 for it!)...

Three English Estates Restored: Before and After

Ah, I didn't know that. I need to look at the stampings and see if there's any other indication.

A Visit to Peter Heinrichs Shop in Germany

This is a short video tour of the temple of pipe smoking in Germany Peter Heinrichs. Also, the channel is worth subscribing to for some great pipe content. LINK

Update on the STG Closure Of Sutliff and Mac Baren

Don't forget Kopp and Dan Tabak in Germany still do a superb job with their blends. I wonder if STG will move the blending tobaccos (for house blends) and the contract biz to the Dominican Republic factory.

A Question Re: a Dunhill Prince

The image on the bottom is very close to being an apple shape. Another couple of mm higher and it would be an apple. The pipe on the top looks fine to me to call a prince. It has a bit of acorn in it. But maybe that is the reflection shine? If you search for a Dunhill Shell 3407 shape you will...

    Mac Baren Stockton 2024

Ah yes I forgot about Vanilla Roll Cake. That one is too artificial for my taste. Though I like the sweetness. But there is also a blend called just "Roll Cake." It's all so confusing.

    Mac Baren Stockton 2024

There are three spun cut regular production blends in the US: Dark Twist, Club Blend and Roll Cake. I love Dark Twist (molasses casing). I recall not liking Club Blend as much. Never tried Roll Cake but I think I need to. Does anyone have experience with Roll Cake?

    Opening A Tin? Show Us!

I too saw those 5-packs on Tin Bids. They looked so fresh and clean--I would have made the same mistake assuming the interiors were at least salvageable based on how well they appeared to have been kept.

    Opening A Tin? Show Us!

I've never been a fan of Marlin Flake. I love how it is presented, but the black Cavendish mutes the flavor in my opinion and gives it an ashy note as it burns.

    Alternatives to Golden Slice

Interesting. Also good news for any of us who feared a move to a new factory might change the blend.

Interesting Completed Ebay Auctions - British Pipes

Looks like 1970's. Not sure what the second digit is. The shape code was not used prior to the 1970's.
