    TAD Acquisitions 2024

These days I'm a net seller of tobacco. That means I'm optimizing by selling tins I have grown apart from and adding only a few here and there on things I know I will smoke. The truth is I over-bought before I knew where my taste would settle out.

    Stanwell Shapes 62, 63, and 64. Differences?

Agree. There are many out there. A lot unsmoked too. Collectors who can't bring themselves to smoke a new old stock piece. Those will one day re-enter the market for sure. The 64 I had was larger than the 63. Taller and just a bigger piece of briar overall.

STG closes Mac Baren and Sutliff

That is not actually an official Dunhill company web site. It is just a domain name that was registered by the original owners of CupOJoes. They did a big business selling Dunhill pipes on their site for years. When they sold their shop, that web site went with it. Dunhill the company actually...

    Stanwell Shapes 62, 63, and 64. Differences?

I have owned (and sold) all three of the 6X shapes. You used to see them all the time. When the factory in Denmark was still producing pipes sites like SmokingPipes would have new batches of them every few weeks. Now you rarely find them on Ebay. It's so sad.

One more photo for the road.

STG closes Mac Baren and Sutliff

This has become a pointless debate. The question of distribution is always solvable. They distribute Peter Stokkebye bulk in the US under some arrangement. The question really is what products (including blending components) will they choose to keep in production longer term. They clearly...

STG closes Mac Baren and Sutliff

Didn't Mac Baren move production of the Amphora line to Planta?

STG closes Mac Baren and Sutliff

I wonder if STG currently makes the small Mac Baren sized coins. I know they make the larger disks of Escudo and Davidoff Medalions. But they will need to transition the Mac Baren blends they decide to keep over to the Assens factory beginning in 2027. So some time to work on that.

STG closes Mac Baren and Sutliff

The Mac Baren blends like Mixture and Dark Twist were once among the best sellers. Then they got lost in the shuffle of so many other hyped blends and the reputation of Mac Bite. The HH blends are really what saved them in terms of volume in the US. Old Dark Fired. Pure Virginia. These will end...

STG closes Mac Baren and Sutliff

Mac Baren did such a good job with Capstan. Their version began in 2013. Before then it was at STG's Assens factory. The STG version was good too, a bit stronger actually. Interesting that it will now be returning to STG. Of course many years ago it was a UK made blend.

Acrylic Stems vs Vulcanite Stems: A Comparison

I don't clench the pipe so I have no need for the softer vulcanite. I prefer the no hassle maintenance of acrylic. Having said that I own and buy pipes with both types of stems.

Storing Pipe Tobacco During Home Remediation From Hurricane

I think the storage pod will be fine. I had my entire cellar in an non-airconditioned storage room through several New York summers of 80-90 degree heat. No change in the tobacco. Dark and dry are more important than temp.

Davidoff Flake Medallions: To Age Or Not To Age?

The Perique isn't too sharp, and I'm sensitive. It's good stuff fresh, better aged. But I agree with those who say you should smoke one tin and age the other. Part of the pipe smoking journey is learning the blends and your taste. You need to try a lot of different blends to build that...

Dunhill 3204 Shell Bulldog with Saddle Bit

Agree 2010 is about the year I started to see some odd shaping. They have had trouble with the Dublin, and some of the bent billiards. I wonder if they lost some of their experienced carvers.

Dunhill 3204 Shell Bulldog with Saddle Bit

Just picked up this perfect small/medium sized bulldog with saddle bit. This is shape 3204 in the shell sandblast finish. This pipe was made in year 2024 as stamped. It's going to be a good plug and flake pipe due to its smaller bowl. I've been critical recently of some of the Dunhill shaping...

***What Are You Smoking, October 2024?***

13 year old Capstan blue in a Stanwell shape 56 (their standard Canadian). This one has an interesting history. It was made for the 1982 Danish slow smoking championship. I bought it about 15 years ago from a dealer who had it still unsmoked. It's got a small/medium group 3 size bowl so I turned...

    Long distant cellar transport

Is it mostly tins? I moved from New York to California some years ago and I had mostly tins and one jar of Penzance. Everything was fine. Today I am smoking the stuff and all seals good and contents fine. I was moved by professional movers. It took about 3-4 weeks for the truck to make its way...

    Do You Reuse Mason Jars?

I tend to re-use them for the same blend because I write the name on the lid with a Sharpie and I'm lazy.

A Visit to Dunhill's London Pipe Factory

And here is Shane Ireland's visit to the factory for SP from 2019. You can see the same staining station seen in the other writeup and seen in the video when they stain the shell pipes. LINK https://www.smokingpipes.com/smokingpipesblog/single.cfm/post/visiting-the-white-spot

Of course I'm sure many of you have seen this How It's Made episode on Dunhill as well, but it's from a while back. The article above is from last year. LINK
