I thought this one was pretty slick too.

Hmmmm…
I have an 8 dot with a sterling silver mount. This might be the one Todd asked me about.

I recall one of his posts where he stated that he had over 70 Blakemar pipes, most unsmoked 😲
I suspect a lot of the English estates currently listed by The Danish Pipe Shop are from his collection
I didnt realise he has passed,I remember him commenting many times about Peterson pipes and the fact he had many unsmoked ones in his collection RIP

I have had old estates start crackling when smoked for the first time after a rehab. An old Sasieni that I love makes a popping sound when it gets to a certain temp. I don't smoke it because of this.
Had you used salt/alcohol treatments or the like? When I see those or, more striking still, the stummels submerged in jars of alcohol, I wonder what are the consequences for the wood.

I’ve used the salt treatment for a couple of my pipes and have had no issues.

However, I’d never even consider submerging the whole stummel in alcohol. That seems like a recipe for disaster.

Mark I has described doing this many times in his blog ("So I gave it a 24-hr. dunk in an isopropyl bath, and it popped out smelling clean and sweet. "), so I finally tried it on a stummel that was going to have to be completely restored, leaving it overnight. It smelled better when done, and the process didn't do any harm. Alcohol evaporates quickly and I've used the salt/alcohol chamber treatment countless times, so I wasn't concerned about trying it.

So that you can see 'before & after' pics, and here it straight from him, here's an example of a restore Mark did where he soaked a stummel: 79. The Wrong Pipe: Reconditioning A MADE IN EIRE 312 System

I didn't do the work. It was restored by SmokingPipes estate department. They tend to do a nice job without over doing it.

Might be worth asking about, but you are right about their work. I rarely buy pipes already restored (a statement more about my status as a skinflint than my prowess at restoration), but I will buy from them because they tend to adhere to the “first, do no harm” principle.

Recent eBay Dunhill, I am entirely lost at sea, due to the amount of Dunhill information out there (so much!). Any ideas about date and shape would be appreciated.

I should leave it to the experts but can't resist a stab at the date. Looks a bit like a "12" after Made In England, so 1972? 34011 means group 3 followed by the shape number, I think.

I'm probably talking bolex.
