Hi,

I am serching a new pipe and I am a fan of Dunhill‘s Amber Root finish. Now, I found a Prince, Amber flame pipe, but the shape looks a bit strange to me. But I am absolutely no expert, that‘s why I want to ask you if you think everything is fine with the shaping.
In my opinion the bowl goes up too straight. Do you see there a false shaping and which shaping is the better one between those two shown pipes?

Same pipe, just from the other side.

This looks more correct to me, but as I said I am no expert.

Thanks for your opinion and advice.

Neither looks "right"; Loewe created the Prince shape, so I would bow in their direction.

My Peterson version is shaped more like the last pic; however, neither of your examples has the necessary 8° stem curve required to qualify.

Thanks. Yes, you are right. I prefer straight pipes. I forgot to mention. I was focused on the bowl in my post. But the straight stem is also something that bothers me a bit in the background, bit I think I could accept it.

If you care this much then examining online pictures will probably not be enough for you.

From these pictures I can't really tell if the bottom line is truly flat. The rise up from the shank is a little lacking to my eyes in these pictures, but really you want to get your hands on it to get a better idea.

I would agree that there is something "off" about the proportions and shaping of that Dunhill Amber Flame. The second is much closer to what I would want, especially if it had a slightly longer stem.

The image on the bottom is very close to being an apple shape. Another couple of mm higher and it would be an apple. The pipe on the top looks fine to me to call a prince. It has a bit of acorn in it. But maybe that is the reflection shine? If you search for a Dunhill Shell 3407 shape you will see a low profile prince much like that.

Really interesting, I think my understanding of a Prince shape was really a bit off. The lower one looks really a bit like an apple. Thanks.

My understanding is that the prince shape has an ever so slight curve to it. It is in all the pipes on the link Al shared. I find it to be a very elegant shape and one worthy of your quest.

I will look around to see if I have a Dunhill in that shape. I think mine was a 2005 and I gave it to my kid for his birth year pipe on his 18th Bday.

Sorry to bother again, but what do you think about those two pipes?
Do they match the Price criteria and is their shaping good?
Many thanks for your help.

It doesn't seem like my place to argue with Dunhill over pipe shapes, but I really don't like a lot of what they sell as a "Prince." Many of their smaller Princes are acorn-y. And I think the stem should at least be slightly curved if you're going to call it a "Prince."

But then, I love the hell out of my Savinelli 313, which also deviates from the ideal Prince form. puffy
