Bits of Tobacco Fused to Bowl?

Happens all the time, I just scrape them off with a knife every so often.

    Open Tins Question

If it doesn’t look or smell funny….smoke it! It’s most likely fine.

***What Are You Smoking, September 2021?***

Whole leaf blend. American English crumble cake. Full flavour, spicy and nutty. The Latakia isn’t too overpowering and just sits even with the burley, proving lots of richness. The perique keeps a spicy top note and the Virginia’s just add a little sweetness and toasty bread. Burn slow and cool...

    2021 Fall/Winter Blends

It’s getting a tad cooler and rainy here on the southern west coast of Canada. Feeling a little more drawn to the Latakia. I was into some nice vaper flakes and Kentucky when it was hotter out. Since I do my own blending I can tailor things to my needs anytime I want. I’m heading into a...

A Picture Of My Import Duty From Alberta/Canada

Yep and this is part of the reason I buy whole leaves and do my own blending. It’s getting ridiculous!

    Almost Off The Cigs

Keep going! It was a slow and steady reduction in cigs for me but I eventually got down to 1 cig a day and then 1 every few days until I stopped completely abd only smoke pipe now a few bowls a day. I’ll have the occasional cig but prefer pipe 99% of the time. I was smoking around 10-12 ryo...

    Pipe Reaming Tools

I think for a casual smoker such as yourself a good pocketknife with a somewhat rounded tip and some sandpaper should suffice. I smoke a few bowls a day and just use a pocketknife to regularly scrape the buildup. For a deep clean on estate pipes with tons of cake I bring out the sandpaper to...

    Smoking Pure Nicotiana Rustica

I once sat and smoked(and inhaled) as much as I could of rustica(or actually the one sold as “dohka”) to see what would happen haha. After a few min I passed out into a sort of dream state. I haven’t done it again since, but it was interesting. I’ve heard that’s sometimes how it’s been smoked in...

    Smoking Pure Nicotiana Rustica

i think once it’s dried you’ll get a good buzz going on. It’s not much more potent than a blend with lots of Kentucky and perique, but it’s a little deceiving as it’s fairly smooth and relatively mild(but distinct) tasting. I haven’t tried the leaf only version but have grown my own before.

How Do You Save a Blend

Kentucky and perique can save most blends IMO. Also pressing to a plug and stoving can meld and smooth things out.

***What Are You Smoking, September 2021?***

Whole leaf blend. I call it sailors twist. A dark, rich, stout and cool smoke. 60% kentucky 20% red and bright Virginia 20% latakia soaked with black spiced rum and twisted up and stoved for 16 hours until black. Thick clouds of cool smoke. No bite, no matter how you puff. I am smoking the...

What to do with New Old Pipe

1+ for sandpaper. Just take it slow and easy. Use a dowel or pencil to wrap the sandpaper around. A finger works too, but can be more prone to accidentally bending the paper too far and damaging the rim. If it were me, i would just clean the shank and bowl with some soft and bristle pipe...

    Breaking in an MM Cob.

I kind of like the first few bowls of a cob in regards to the flavour imparted by the sidewalls, but that goes away very quickly. As for the stem at the bottom. Yes I agree it doesn’t taste very good. But just stop smoking once you start to taste that, don’t worry about burning it away, after 10...

    Perique

Get some blending perique and add it to your blends. You’ll get to know perique real fast. I buy 1/2lb of whole leaves at a time for my blending. Might be a bit much for you, but other members have suggested companies which offer smaller amounts. I love the stuff! Dan tobaccos St. Bernard is a...

Cleansing The Palate Between/During Smoking Sessions

When it’s back to back bowls I like to switch it up(burley, Virginia or Latakia blends) too much of the same thing can get boring. But also maybe try some tobaccos that are less taxing on the palette? Or just have your “not so exquisite” blends for the later bowls, just something easy, that you...

    Seconds and Sub-Brands

I think much of the time they are the same thing. The sub or seconds brand usually having some minor cosmetic issue that they wouldn’t want to sell as a higher end pipe. They are a great deal in my opinion and often are drilled the same as the high grades and sometimes have quite nice briar. All...

    What's Your Profession?

I don’t know, haven’t I already replied to this thread? Not sure but anyway, since the last few years I’ve been running a small scale organic farm with my girlfriend. Hence the username. Other than that I make music, not much money there, but it is a semi professional thing. I’ve pretty much...

Help on De-Caking Massive Dottle Build-up

I’ve bought some meers that were caked up. I just carefully used a knife to get the big chunks off and hit the sandpaper before you get down to the bowl. You can gradually work your way up with the grit to get it really smooth.

    Too Dry...

I just lay it out and use a bottle sprayer and mist with water. Then jar it up and wait a day or two and check. The moisture will spread through the tobacco faster if it’s heated like in a hot porch or somewhere very warm. alson sometimes use a folded up paper towel that is soaked in water...

    Virginia

1+ For capstan blue. Definitely a solid blend to try if you are looking to Virginia’s.
