***What Are You Smoking, November 2021?***

“whole leaf blend”. Just straight kentucky ribbon cut in a legend cob. Sometimes I like to do a little reset and sometimes it’s with Kentucky. It’s such a powerhouse leaf that’s so well behaved. It is a prominent feature in many of my blends, especially the ones I smoke regularly.

    Leftovers

Use every bit and make soup with the rest. Turkey omelette ? Sure! Turkey poutine l? Sure! I always am conscious of food waste and use all I can. Make lots of broth with leftover bones and vegetable peels on the regular, so definitely using all the leftovers. my partner isn’t the biggest fan of...

    An Odd Question About Virginias

    What blends are you smoking?

    How Dry is Too Dry?

All depends on the ambient humidity too. I can leave some blends out for several days in parts on my house and they are excellent to smoke. In a hotter, dryer house or room things could be too dry after several hours.

***What Are You Smoking, November 2021?***

Whole leaf blend. Maybe call it “night shift”…. Anyway. A no holds barred powerhouse blend of only the most flavourful tobaccos in large proportions. It still classifies as an English/Latakia blend in my books though. 25% Kentucky 25% latakia 25% perique 25% red virginia coarse chopped...

How Do I Turn Aromatics Into Aroenglishes?

Ya get some Latakia and a cheap scale and start with adding around 10% for a noticeable flavour boost and go from there! You don’t necessarily need a scale to get good results, but it can help get repeatable results. next could add some orientals if you want to spice things up, but I’d start...

What Blend did your Grandfather Smoke?

My grandpa didn’t smoke but my wife’s grandpa(who was a French baker and also was in the military) smoked Prince Albert. They only remember him smoking once a week on Sunday, and he traded his cigarettes for sugar in the military. So not a big smoker, but that’s what he smoked.

I Think I Finally Perfected My "Black English" Home Blend...

Sounds tasty! I’ve done many a test of various English style blends. Just adjust to your preferences. I like around 20-25% latakia but my orientals usually sit around 10-15%. Unless I really want them to stand out. sometimes I’ll wrap the plug in foil and stove it @200F for some or many hours...

The (Un)Official PipesMagazine Secret Santa 2021!

Ya I’m signed up. Been thinking of which blends I want to give. Hoping I get paired up with someone who likes strong tobacco ;)

What's your Go-to Process for Estate Pipes?

Sometimes I have a bowl or two before I deep clean and get a taste of grandpas ghost. Sometimes I don’t even deep clean(but I usually do)

Anyone Mainly Buy Bulk Tobaccos (or Even Exclusively)?

I only smoke whole leaf tobacco I process myself. Buying several lbs at a time. I love blending, pressing and stoving, but also buy “bulk” because I live in Canada and well… ya, you don’t need to hear me rant about that again lol.

***What Are You Smoking, November 2021?***

Whole leaf blend. American English No. 3. A powerhouse blend with Kentucky and Latakia sharing center stage, with red Virginia and basma orientals singing backup. Once the bbq and smoky dies down in the last half of the bowl, the sweet and spice Virginia and orientals do a little duet. Quite a...

    Need Seeds

Bakers creek seeds for interesting and rare varieties. Osborne seeds or Johnny’s seeds are some great companies for more standard types and where I order many of my seeds from.

Pipe Smoking: A Thinking Man's Hobby or a Respite from Mental Chatter?

It’s definitely a sort of meditation for me, but my meditative state is also my creative state, so there’s still some activity going on up there, just of a different kind. I can do laborious work while smoking but I like at least a few moments in the pipe trance. Im also tasting and analyzing...

The magic of the last few minutes of the bowl!

For blends heavy in burley/Kentucky I especially enjoy the last half of the bowl. After the perique or Latakia dies back a bit and the Virginia starts to get some more body. Things really meld.

Honest Question: Why do we Care what a Smoker calls Himself?

Call me whatever ya want, I know what I am. Call yourself whatever ya want, no skin off my back. I do usually use the term pipe smoker, as a pipe smoker is like a cigarette smoker or a cigar smoker. There isn’t really like a cigaretter or a cigarer or a cigger. But maybe there should be!?!?

    Freehand Pipes

Must all pipes be the same handful of “classic” shapes? (BORING!) Woodworking is a craft that easily lends itself to creative expression. I’m surprised the freehand movement didn’t happen sooner with pipes, but as @cosmicfolklore said it went with the times. some people like opera, some like...

    Beginner Perspective of Peterson's Nightcap

Jar it up and leave it for a bit. If you’re interested in blending, then try a range of blends and get to know each type of tobacco used. When you come back to blends you’ve already tried, You’ll probably notice something new about them, maybe able better to pick out the flavours of individual...

    Dedicated pipes and flavor

Well think about it like, if you smoke a lot of the same blend over and over and “ghost” the pipe, it still carries that flavour into the next bowl, which is especially noticeable when switching blends. But if you keep smoking the same blend the oils left behind will add to the flavour of the...
