    Pipe Making Apprenticeship

batdemon, That would be great. I have a buddy close that I get together with and could get him up here the same time. He's the one got me into pipe smoking. I paid him back by getting him into pipe making. LOL! I'm actually heading out from the airport up there Saturday for a couple weeks or so...

    Pipe Making Apprenticeship

waz, I live out in the sticks, we're so far out I can barely get dial up internet or keep it working. LOL! I live about 2 hours west of St. Louis Missouri. I've actually had a few people visit and we always have a good time. I can even put you up for a night or two if you bring your own tent. :)

    Pipe Making Apprenticeship

ejames, I hope you do, it's an open invitation so just any time I'm home is good for me. That invitation is also open for anyone else that may be interested in coming by for a smoke and possibility of learning something........ which I highly doubt you will...... :)

    Pipe Making Apprenticeship

First off, I'd get a couple pre-drilled pipe kits and give it a try. You would quickly find out what tools you really do have that work for the shaping and finishing. You would also quickly find out things aren't always as easy as some can make them look. Pipe making is difficult for most just...

    Lets do another tamper trade.

I'm actually working on one or two to get in on this.

    Lets do another tamper trade.

Ejames, I use a jet 9x20 metal lathe to do all my turning and shaping. The cross slide and tool holder is easily removed from my lathe and I made a small tool rest that opts quickly in its place. But you can actually make something that will mount in the tool holder that will work. Many have...

Review of Smokindawgs Freehand Canadian ((pic heavy))

Nathan, I'm glad it meets with your approval and that your enjoying the new pipe. The tamper was kind of an after thought but turned out well too. May the pipe smoke cool and dry for you for Many years to come.

    Lets do another tamper trade.

Count me in. I made three tampers today but those three are all sold. I can whip out some more easily in time.

    Freehand Canadian

I chose Zebra Wood because I had the piece setting here already and I love the grain it has. It does make a great tamper as I've used it for tampers before. I may have to make a matching tamper for this one. Thanks for the positive comments guys. :)

    Freehand Canadian

I'm having trouble with photobucket at the moment, so will try to add some more pictures later.

    Freehand Canadian

There was a challenge a bit back to make a freehand type pipe with a canadian stem. I can't turn a big enough block on my lathe to make one, so went with an extension of zebra wood to make it up. I have a bit of fine tuning to do to the stem to thin the bit a little and open the airway still...

    Retort system

I use one quite a bit. Probably cleaned close to 100 pipes using the same one. I use a propane torch for the heat source and have never had a problem. I came up with a rubber cork system with a vent hose I use in place of the cotton. Keeps me from getting alcohol on the finish most the time. If...

    Another "bullet" tamper; 7/14/12

Nice work indeed. I like the look. Once it slows down around here, I need to get back in the shop more and get back to work on some more myself.

I'm thinking about giving pipe making a try

I'll give the same type advice. Start with a couple per drilled kits first. Getting set up to make pipes can be very costly. Especially if you do as many new carvers do and get the wrong tooling, such as too small a lathe. If you decide after the kits that you want to keep at it, do lots of...

    Horrible Timing

    Ammo Tamper Prototype

Take a look at pipe Accessories and scroll down to recent ammo pipe tampers and the one with the internal pick is there.

    Ammo Tamper Prototype

Nice job BentMike. I think cutting the casing alolowsd more uniform shaping and allows for a better looking tamper than the full length. (Just my opinion) I'll be making a few more from exotic woods. I'm going to try too make one from wood with the internal pick as well, like I did with the one...

    Substitute for Zippo Lighter Fluid?

White gas/Coleman camp stove lantern fuel is what I use all the time. I wouldn't use anything in mine that said wax or oil in the description.

    Sven Lars, Freehand, Handmade

NS, I do have one of the pipes that this maker produced. It is as yet unsmoked and I don't see myself smoking it. This line was actually made by a US pipe maker. He made pipes under several names including the Sven Lar name which he started using around 1973. Here is a link to more information...
