Ok, I made another today. These tampers are all a learning experience and I like your opinions. This is oak. Coated in beewax to give a natural look.

Count me in. I made three tampers today but those three are all sold. I can whip out some more easily in time.

Got this one done. Cut it from the truck of a small dead Locust tree,at least I think it's Locust. The pieces behind the tamper are what was left after I cut it up looking for a piece that was crack free--there wasn't any as you can see.Got a bug hole also.

Wow very cool tampers everyone I would get in on this but I just use the lame old pipe tool as my tamper.I might have to try making some to trade.

@Uber-thanks brother, if you get to pick on of mine and choose

#5, since it already has a pointed end, I will carve a tiny scoop

in that end for snuff ;-)

As soon as our AT&T DSL is back up, I'll post pictures of the tamper I made today. I did a carving...it's a hoot.

ejames, that is a really cool tamper! I love the wood. The bug hole is fun.
Uber, The goal is to make a tamper without bloodshed. Before each cut, think about where the knife would go, if the wood suddenly was not there. If your finger is in the path, change the path. A longer piece of wood helps. I hope you like the blanks I sent you.
Dragon, the briars are sweet. I love the grain, and like the rustification.

Here's the tamper that I made today. I tried to do more carving and be more creative.

And it looks like it will be a very nice one. Doing that type of turning is something I've never done, but want to learn. Thinking I may buy a small wood lathe one of these days. My little 7X12 metal lathe isn't really suited for that type of work.I think it isn't anyway?

Thanks! That's a good question ejames. My last experience with metal lathes was the big monsters back in high school metal shop. I don't see why one couldn't adapt a small one like yours to do wood. You would have to find a flat tool rest and maybe a spur drive but you could also just chuck up your wood stock in the jaw chuck. Jaw chucks are commonly used in wood turning. On the other hand there is some sweet wood lathes out there in the 2-5 hundred dollar range.

I do some wood turning in my lathe. For a spur I've modified a 5/8" forstner bit. Can't do any really intricate( at least I can't) turning but I can turn penblanks round and do some simple grooving. Only have a 3 jaw chuck,an independent 4 jaw is on my short list. Now that you mention it seems like I have seen a tool rest made for these small lathes for wood turning.Guess it wouldn't be to hard to make one.

Took a little longer than I thought but here are my tampers for the trade. Person who wins mine can choose one or 2 and I'll also send a little tobacco.

From left to right

-First one is drift wood found along the Tennessee River in, well, Tennessee with a gunstock stain, a thin coat of polyurethane, and 9 mm shell
-Second one is a random stick I found along the shores of Lake Erie with polyurethane and a 9 mm shell casing
-Third one is cut drift wood from the same piece as the first one but is just smaller.
-Fourth one is drift wood Found along Watts Bar Lake in Tennessee. That color is all natural with a little olive oil and carnuba wax for the finish and a 9 mm shell casing cut down with tube cutters.
-Fifth one is birch I found near Grayling, Michigan. I just applied a little olive oil and if memory serves me right a little carnuba wax. Again to top it off a cut down 9 mm shell.
