Hey Frank. It just has to do the job. Get a stick, cut one end flat and one end pointy, sand it, stain it and stick the flat end in a spent cartridge case with some glue and you have a tamper.

I don't have any wood working equipment anymore and am always traveling. If one of you fine craftsman ever decide to sell any of your wares PM me. I would love to purchase one(or a few).

As Baron said, a stick works. If you find a neat looking stick, that feels good in the hand, you can make a tamper. You can leave the flat end as wood, or use a spent cartridge. If you can drill the hole, you could simply add a screw with a large head. This is open to all skill levels. Once you make your first, you will want to make more.

I used spent a spent shell casing. Some I even cut with tube cutters my dad gave me a month or so ago. How do you put an internal pick in? Do you have to have a lathe for that?

You can count me in. My skills are primitive, so my tamper will have to be rustic in appearance.

TheSmokinDragon's Briar Rail Spike Tamper w/black rusticated band (better picture in the AM, when I have some natural light)

Length: 3~3/8"

Weight: .4oz

Material: Briar

Tools used: a file, hand-made rustication spike and some sandpaper

This will be my entry into the tamper trade this time around. I hope all enjoy the design change

Here's my tamper for trade. I completed it yesterday from a tamper that I had started to make a while back. It's made from sun cured hickory, stained with cordovan leather dye, and coated with a thin layer of beeswax. The tamper end is made from a nail head. It's rustic; that's my excuse for imperfection anyway. :(

Never point out flaws. Then the other person will only see the flaw, rather than all the other aspects of the project. You should see the flaws and make the next one better.
Lankford, I really like the spiral affect. I am not sure how you did it, but it looks great. Hickory can be a bear to work with.

I just showed Lankford's tamper to my son. He said "if you do not apologize for it, people will assume you did it on purpose and will copy you."

Very true! Thanks. I will also send a couple of tobacco samples to whoever is to receive mine.
