Anyone know how to build a cheap buffer?

1725rpm is what most look for, but I started out with a bench grinder and cheap buffing wheels from Harbor freight. It will do you a good job. Just remember a few things, 1) Keep a good grip on the pipe/stem while in contact with the wheel 2) Use a light touch between pipe/stem and buffing...

Who's Attending the Chicago Pipe Show???

I really wanted to attend, but am out of town and don't fly back into St. Louis till Saturday morning. Not enough time to make it up. And I sure wanted to go.

A question for the turners around here.

If it's not built out of tin foil, a 6" chuck should work just fine on the lathe with no ill effects. And I don'e see that it would cause any more belt wear than a smaller chuck. Of course there are some crappy machines out there so take this with a grain of salt. (Not saying your tools are...

    Kharma could have used KY.

What doesn't kill us sure gives it a hell of a try. That's what makes us stronger, living thru and dodging the shots. I hope that things work out, lots of good info. At least since you were cut, the company shouldn't fight the unemployment, so shouldn't be hard getting that taken care of...

    Dremel rustication tips

I use dental burrs a lot for rustication, also use ball and some of the more pointed burrs as well. I have lots of old bowls and pipes that I practice on before I go to work on a good pipe. You can do a lot of different things with a dremel when it comes to rustication. From light to heavy and...

    Bad News from the Doctor...

    Having new pipe made!

I've watched Chris progress from beginning pipe maker to where he is now. I've even been lucky enough to meet up with him and find him to be a great guy. He's come a very long way. I've got some of his beginning work and seen some of his newer stuff. He's learned a lot and put it to work for...

    Been MIA!

I've been real busy with "Get Ready For Spring!" stuff around the house. Haven't been in the shop much and haven't even been smoking much for the last few weeks. Plus, I think I just needed a break from the net in general. But I'm back and I'm going to get back in the shop to make more pipes...

    Do It Yourself Tobacco Press?

Same here tokerpipes. I think that maybe the 6" HD bench vice I have will do the job...... It just sets there most the time so I'll have to give it a try. After reading the responses about the C-clamps I think you all are correct. Probably bend and ruin them before you get enough pressure. But...

    Do It Yourself Tobacco Press?

I've seen home made presses using a wooden box of any height/size. Then another piece of wood on the top and bottome that just fit inside the box. Then you could use as many C-clamps as needed to fully compress the top and bottom lid once you have the amount of tobacco inside as you want to...

    Parkersburg/Charleston West Virginia?

Any members live in the area? I'm flying into Charleston WV tomorrow afternoon for work. I'll be in the area of Parkersburg for about 6 days. I'll have some evening time to meet up with fellow smokers to share a bowl. Just PM me and I'll give you my phone number. I love making a work trip into...

    80 Degrees Tomorrow

Was 81 here today....... wonderful weather and the wife thinks I should hobble round the yard and get it ready for spring. Doesn't she know I need to rest my leg and let it heal? I bet a few miles ride on the scooter would make it feel better. :)

Rough shapeing of a lucite blank.

These can be rounded in a lathe, either wood or metal. I use a metal lathe. I mark one end as close to center as possible and then drill a small pilot hole, just enough for the point of a live center to set in. I chuck one end in a 4 jaw chuck on the head stock loosely. I use a wood chuck like...

    Pipe Stand for Pictures!

Al, those should work............ It's the ones I'm using and I haven't found a pipe that it won't hold, Yet. Paul, couldn't really patent it, as I just took the idea, already out there for years, from what I saw and put my own twist on it. Take a look in the Buy/Sell/Trade thread.

    What motorcycle.........

I have a fat boy too............ Oh wait, I'm the fat boy, but I'm riding a scooter! Mike, at 467lbs mine is more of a rider than a zipper, but I sure enjoy cruising round on it. Riding it is like setting in a big office chair and it has the power and speed and handles well for riding these...
