    What motorcycle.........

2005 Yamaha Majesty 400cc in Stealth Mode black. (Actually just flat black with matte clear coat over it.) Some don't consider this a motorcycle but I think about it this way... It will run over 100mph, cruise all day at 70mph, get over 50mpg, carry two people and has plenty of storage. It may...

    Pipe Stand for Pictures!

Ok, as promised. I made 4 more of these and took a few pictures while I was doing it. Here is the acrylic rod I used After cutting the acrylic, I chuck it in the lathe and use a forstner bit to face it even. I then use a ball end mill too dish out the disc I cut that sets on top of the...

    Pipe Stand for Pictures!

Al, you may want to take a look at ebay. There is one seller on there that has the disc magnets that have round tapered divot in the center of them already, those would be perfect for doing what you want to do..... Just drill the hole in the top with a forstner bit and then a bit of epoxy on the...

I have the Coolest Girlfriend in the World

A guy named Clinton once shared a cigar with someone too....... Ooops, did I type that one where everyone could see it? Neighbors were probably saying "Look, that guy over there is smoking a cigar right out where everyone can see him!" :) J/K Sounds like you have you a good one Kevin.

    Wife Doesn't Like Me Smoking

I started smoking a pipe only about 6 years ago....... went over 40 years smoking nothing and never did smoke cigarettes. She does smoke cigs so doesn't say a word most the time about where/when I smoke. Once in a great while a blend will hit her nose just wrong and she says something so I...

    Pipe Stand for Pictures!

Thanks for the links Al, I know a couple asked and I'm sure many more wanted to know. I actually went with the 1/2" sphere and the 3/4"x1/8" disc and am happy with it. I didn't want to go too small and have it not work. As I stated in the original post, this magnetic stand isn't/wasn't an...

    Pipe Stand for Pictures!

While the magnetic disk is strong, it wouldn't be strong enough without the magnetic sphere too, especially thru the wood and the acrylic disk too. I think I went the smallest I could go with the magnets even. rlunderhill, I didn't see any true number, I got the magnets on ebay.

    Pipe Stand for Pictures!

Toker, I'd be willing to make em for someone else. I do think I'll make myself another one, only use a shorter acrylic rod. Al, I'll get some pictures when I make the next one tomorrow. You are correct, the sphere magnets are over twice the cost of the disk magnets.

    Pipe Stand for Pictures!

Mike, the magnets are the expensive part. Too get a better price, I purchased mine in lots of 10 each for both the disc and the sphere. Both are magnets, which is what makes this stand work so well.

    Freehand In Progress

You can actually use the stain as a way to find the flaws you want to work on. It's also easy to find the sanding marks you missed. Stain it a dark color and then sand it down again....... Doing this will bring the grain out to your sight much better. You can do this several times if you like...

    Pipe Stand for Pictures!

I've taken lots of pictures of pipes, both new and estates. I've also had the same problems as many other people that photograph their pipes. It seems lighting is a big problem, but an even bigger problem, getting the pipe to set just right so you can get the angle you want without leaning the...

    Latest Work in Progress!

Thanks for the positive comments guys. I'm now trying to decide whether to partially rusticate it or not. I think it lends itself well to this type pipe, where buffing between the bowl and shank are almost impossible, or at the least, a major pain. I'm also going to make a tamper to go with it...

    Another EJH Pipe

Congrats on the new pipe. Eric is doing some great work recently!

    Going to try freehand

firstwordisee, That looks like a decent piece of Plateaux briar. I think you can make a pretty good pipe with that one. It has a lucite stem too. Should make a good looking pipe for you. One tip. The hardest part to do for new carvers when making a freehand is making the stem, freehand shank...

I made it! And and pipers here?

I don't live anywhere close, but have a sister lives in Ogden. I've made a few trips out to visit her and while I enjoyed the visits, it's not a place I want to live. I'm used to small towns of 2-3000 people. Good luck on getting the job.

    Hurricanes and Tornados

We had the hail, high winds and heavy rain but luckily no tornado. But there was one 15 miles from us that gutted a quick stop fuel station and that's close enough for me. Only ever been thru one storm that scared me. Lived in a trailer park at the time and we were lucky. Just about every other...

    Storms moving in

I too don't fear storms, although at times maybe I should. We tend to have lots of tornados in this area and I've only been thru one that made me nervous at all. The storm last night had hail, high winds and lots of heavy rain. No damage here at home, but a quick stop fuel station about 15...

    The weight of pipe tamper

I prefer a lighter tamper myself, especially if it is one I'm carrying in my pocket. When I first started making tampers I was using rounded stainless steel bolts for the tamp end. Then I got my metal lathe and started using aluminum, which is lighter and holds up well for the tamp end.

    Latest Work in Progress!

firstwordisee, I say give it a go....... Nothing like smoking a pipe you made yourself. I made one with a predrilled block and was hooked........ Now I do the drilling and everything. Drilling a pipe in this shape can be tricky. Will do flyfishn. I think that seeing the pipe progress gives...

    Latest Work in Progress!

Yep BB, that's what I'm making it for. First one I've tried and wanted to make it my own, that's why I went with this shape.
