pipe-blank-600x450.jpg

Just bought this off the bay, it is old (old briar is good right?) Time to make a pipe. I have zero experience but I have made longbows before so I have files. Should get this thing in a few days (I hope) and I will keep some updated pics posted.

Thats what I thought Lawrence but I still want to knock off a few chunks and corners to see what is underneath.

I'll be interested in watching your progress, too.
It's been a desire of mine to carve a pipe, but honestly I scarcely have time to smoke a pipe, let alone make one.

A freehand will be a great way to start and the holes are already done -that's the tricky part. If you've got the patience to make longbows you should be able to turn out a fine pipe. Its fun to start removing material and see if you can avoid pits and voids in the briar. A real crapshoot because there is no way to know what's in there until you dig in. Good luck and keep us posted.

firstwordisee, That looks like a decent piece of Plateaux briar. I think you can make a pretty good pipe with that one. It has a lucite stem too. Should make a good looking pipe for you.
One tip. The hardest part to do for new carvers when making a freehand is making the stem, freehand shank and pipe bowl run in a straight line. If that makes sense.
I'm no professional pipe maker by any means, but if I can be of any help, don't hesitate to PM me.
As said, keep us updated. I like seeing pictures of others work, even pictures as you progress are good ones too show.

I found carving freehands beginner-friendly. There isn't much "shape expectation". Nobody looking at the finished product realizes it's nothing like my original intention. Even so, I can always blame minor slips on block imperfections. I wish you much enjoyment during the process, followed by much pride after completion.
