    What are You Reading?

Complete works of Edgar A. Poe. Still plodding along. When Poe is good, he's really good, but there is a lot of mediocre stuff in this "complete works". Maybe an anthology would have been better...or "The Best of Poe".

Chili's new touch screen devices For or Against?

@dochudson said: You may certainly know better than I, but I've seen people who have lost limbs (and worse) from infections that came about from nothing more than scratching a mosquito bite. These were people who had no other contributing co-factors, either. No HIV, diabetes or anything like...

Chili's new touch screen devices For or Against?

I never used to be a germaphobe until recently. One of my coworkers at the hospital would always use his elbow to punch the elevator buttons because he didn't want to get germs on his fingers. It wasn't too long after he got a nasty staph infection on his elbow! His doctor told him to use his...

    Question: Molto Dolce?

Molto Dolce is ok, but I like Taste of Summer better because I can actually identify the flavor I'm tasting.

Chili's new touch screen devices For or Against?

Having touchscreens at a dining table is a bad idea for all the reasons the OP states. I could be a little more for it if a newly sanitized tablet is brought to the table just for ordering and then after the meal for paying. Leaving it at the table for everyone to get their greasy fingers on is...

    He Doesn't like pipe Smokers

Obviously the proprietor wants people who come in and buy stuff without thinking about it. I can't say if I'm representative of all pipe smokers, (probably not) but I do take my time when shopping for pipes and tobacco. That's probably what drives them crazy. I always have questions they don't...

    A Pre-1900 CPF - Salesman Sample?

Very cool! you have to wonder where pipes like this have been hanging out for the last century!

    Recent Buys on Ebay

@newbroom, Nine Medicos?! I'll be very interested to see pictures after you've gotten them all sorted out. I haven't been disappointed with a Medico estate yet. Here's a Medalist I'm inserting into the rotation today: The grate in the Guardsman would be very difficult to clean had the pipe been...

    Rotation Swap New Pipe

Love this kind of story! Waiting to see the pics. I'm heading to my local antique store this afternoon. (Jeeze, it's 4AM!) It's been dry the last couple of months but maybe something came in.

    A Pipe Smokers Health

@ae1pt, you are a man of reason, a dying breed these days. It truly is all about statistics and actuarial tables. We weigh the risks and we make our informed decisions based on science. I'm fast approaching sixty years old myself and have lived a fairly responsible lifestyle while taking care of...

    Jim's GLP Gaslight Review

I appreciate the informed review. Like gtclark, I've got a sample coming in as well. Interesting about the cocoa note coming through because I've noticed the same thing with other balkan blends I've been trying and didn't know how to account for it.

    Recent Buys on Ebay

Got the Douglas this afternoon and did a quick clean up on it. I've never seen so much oxidation on a pipe stem, and I still have more work to do in that regard.

    Wally Frank Refreshed

When I first started refurbishing my own pipes I tried using a Dremel with a small polishing wheel. It was very difficult to get an even coat of wax with such a small wheel. So I think you are better off hand polishing. You might try picking up a stick of carnauba wax at Amazon.com and try that...

    What are You Reading?

I'm currently plodding through the complete works of Edgar A. Poe on my Kindle. I just finished "Bernice", a short story I had never read. Fascinating and horrifying! The Phillip Glass "Dracula" soundtrack works well with this story too.

Show Off Your Dr. Grabow Pipes Here!

I got this Viscount yesterday in just the opposite condition of the Belvedere in the above post. It arrived in brand new condition. It's never been smoked! Just a bit of oxidation on the stem. Sometimes I get lucky.

Russ's Cinnamon Roll (from Nov 2013)... in New Cobs

I've got some of that kicking around here. I believe I'll have a bowl of it in a few minutes in my ol' Ropp cherrywood.

    Vintage pipe tobacco ads

Another idea is stop by your local antique store and browse the ubiquitous piles of old Life magazines. Some of them have full page pipe and tobacco ads you can cut out, mount and frame.

    A Pipe Smokers Health

ae1pt said: While I suspect this is true, I haven't been able to find any real studies to confirm it. One that came close was a study of pipe smokers who inhaled the tobacco into their lungs, so I think that one should be thrown out. Another used subjects who smoked all day up to an estimated...

    Six Thousand Posts

The only way I'll get to 6000 posts is I post from the grave. Hmmm....just might give that a try when the opportunity arises. Look for the post, "The Real Haunted Bookshop" about ten or fifteen years from now.

    Wally Frank Refreshed

I go by your philosophy or refresh rather than restore as well. I want to get my pipes as clean as possible and repair moderate or major damage but I'm not bothered by minor dings or a wisp of charring on the rim. Did you buff with carnauba wax on that pipe or do you prefer to not use that?
