The Specials frontman Terry Hall dies

Very cool! Bradbury was such a great drummer, wasn't he? I love listening to old ska/rocksteady now. "Alexa, play Prince Buster." I've been turned on to all sorts of cool stuff that way. Desmond, Holt, Bob Andy, Ken Boothe, etc. Such cool music. You're a lucky man to be doing that!

The Specials frontman Terry Hall dies

@brooklynpipeclub Indeed! The Untouchables put on a great show in those days at a tiny little sweat box in LA called the On Klub. Loved that early 2 Tone stuff, but drifted more toward reggae and other stuff when those bands stopped touring in the 80s. Saw Madness, Selector, and the Beat a few...

The Specials frontman Terry Hall dies

You bet. I've seen a lot of reggae and a few ska shows over the years - the ska was mostly the original 2 Tone bands and our #1 local band back in the day (early 80s), the Untouchables. Dave Wakeling still shows up locally from time to time.

The Specials frontman Terry Hall dies

Awesome you got to see them in 2010! The show I saw was at the Fox Theater in Pomona, CA. I don't recall seeing an opening band, but an old online listing for that show says someone called Lori Vee was opening.

The Specials frontman Terry Hall dies

Saw this earlier and it made me feel sad. The Specials were a pivotal band, and their 1st album is probably the best of the whole 2 Tone genre. Terry Hall was a big part of what made them so great, with his unique voice and vocal delivery. I never got to see the band during its heyday, but I...

Looking for Suggestions: tobaccos with anise or tonquin bean

If you enjoyed SWR, you may like Granger as well - it also has an anisette flavor. I prefer it to SWR. As far as Lakelands, I'd recommend just going all in, as tonquin is a flavoring used in quite a few of them Grab a new cob or two and give Brown Flake Aromatic, Coniston, Sam's Flake, and...

What Are You Listening To? - December 2022

I'm sitting in the car waiting for my kiddos to leave a party, listening to local college radio, a great show of classic Mexican boleros by artists like Los Panchos with Eydie Gormé. Fantastic.

This is a good question - looking forward to knowing the answer. 3 mm is pretty slim!

Pipe Lighter - Leads and Recommendations

I have a Vertigo Puffer. I can refill it, it's got a 90 degree butane flame, and includes pipe tools for about 20 bucks. I've heard others say it didn't last them long, but mine has been trouble-free for two years.

    Drexel Pipe Tobacco

After trying it out I bought a few more pouches to jar up. I liked it. It's similar to LNF but a little darker in the flavor profile. It's nothing fancy, but it's got a good straightforward flavor and the price, especially now, is terrific. It has a tendency to arrive dry, but I didn't have...

    US flakes I can try

I saw at least 4 flakes made by Watch City available in bulk on their website last night. Wessex are tinned, made in Germany, and yes, frequently sold out on many sites.

    US flakes I can try

Also, Watch City makes some very good flakes; don't know if they ship overseas. Maybe check out the Wessex flakes; they're not made in the US, but highly regarded by many. You're lucky to have access to all those Gawith flakes and ropes overe there!

    What Are Some Light/Sweet VA/VaPers?

OGS, yes. If you want to try something down the aromatic road (but not too far) I would recommend GH Glengarry Flake. It's straight Virginia with some honey topping, and it's delicious and easy to smoke.

    Rum Tobacco Blends

I love me some Plantation rum, especially the double-aged and any of their multi-year aged bottlings. Gawith Hoggarth Rum Flake has rum, though it's also got the Lakeland sauce. Samuel Gawith Navy Flake is more straightforward with a rum topping, but good luck finding any.

Big Dollar Pipes vs Lower Priced Pipes

Seriously, there are so many good choices in the $100 and under range that I never think about going much beyond that for a new pipe. Rossi, Ropp, Kaywoodie, Peterson, Savinelli, Molina, Rattray's, Brigham, Falcon...I think the least I paid for a great new pipe was my Medico back-of-the-box...

    Your "No Fuss/Go To" Tobacco?

For me it's OGS or Granger. Always good, always easy, always available.

The Clash Guitarist Keith Levene Dies

Atkins was the drummer for PiL, among others. Rowan Atkinson is Mr. Bean, but I prefer to think of him as Edmund, Lord Blackadder.

The Clash Guitarist Keith Levene Dies

Was a big PiL fan back in the day, got to see them live in an astounding show at the Pasadena Convention Center with Savage Republic opening up, this would have been November 1982. I believe Levene was still performing with the group at that point. Some time later, I recognized him sitting...
