    Savinelli Gold vs Punto Oro

Along the same line of questions, is there anything particular about the Punto Oro Mister G line? My only Savinelli is a Mister G 404, and it's one of my favorites pipes.

    Irish Whisky

I could be wrong, but I would only argue that the characteristic smokey flavor inherent in the majority of Scotch whiskies is a result of the use of peated malt, in whatever percentage the individual distillery chooses to include in their final product. I expect most Scotch to express that...

    Irish Whisky

I'm happy with the standard offering - never tried the 12 year or any of their other special bottlings.

    Irish Whisky

And, malting is a process that is not exclusive to barley, though for some reason it seems to be in the public mind. It's basically a way of increasing the available sugars in the grain by soaking, then drying/toasting. Most malted barley in Scotland is dried using peat, which impregnates the...

    My First Pipe Smells Bad.

Me, I would just check the pipe for any visible mold. If you find some, clean it with a cotton ball or pipe cleaner soaked in your favorite spirit, let it dry, then pack the pipe with tobacco and smoke it. If you find no visible mold, go directly to the packing and smoking. 'Slightly musty'...

    Irish Whisky

Tullamore DEW is easy drinkin', and Black Bush is delicious. I have some Redbreast 12 that I dip into occasionally, but TD is my go-to for an easy Irish. Try some Lowland Scotches for something generally non-peaty.

***What Are You Smoking, May 2023?***

I just finished some OGS folded into my wee Medico dublin. Had some trouble keeping it lit, but it still tasted great.

    The Dublin Shape Gets Subtle

The Savinelli 404 is one of my favorite shapes. I appreciate the exterior silhouette as well as the conical shape of the bowl, and the interesting oval stem. It's just a lovely pipe shape. And I have also struggled with calling it a yacht or zulu, because the forward cant is so subtle compared...

What do you do with your empty tins?

I find that the round 2 & 4 oz tins with the screw top will keep tobacco moist for a long time, so I may use a few for medium-term storage of bulk tobacco purchases instead of mason jars. Otherwise, they're great for paper clips, tacks, screws, nuts and bolts, drill bits, etc.

Shape Name for a Reverse-canted Bowl?

Now, if the bowl opening were headed straight down towards the floor you call it a c... Wait, I can't say that out loud. 🤣

Derby Club in a Missouri Pride cob; goes great with an iced latte.

Shape Name for a Reverse-canted Bowl?

You could maybe experiment with some cob parts to make a prototype. Cobs have the shank glued into the bowl, and they have a variety of stems to try.

    Filters that Minimize Taste Modification.

I'd say the balsa inserts and the 6mm paper filters are the least intrusive on taste. They do both slow the airstream and remove some moisture from smoke, which are both helpful. Maybe try drying your tobacco a bit more as well.

***What Are You Smoking, March 2023?***

I've also been away from the pipe for a bit. Today I finally got around to enjoying a bowl of OGS in my trusty MM Washington cob, followed by some GH BFA in the same, which was really quite nice. Amazing how well an $8 cob performs. I have some nice briars, but I always seem to reach for this...

    1905 Barling Motor Dome

Lovely pipe! Am I correct in assuming that this pipe was designed to be used while tooling about in a motor carriage, perhaps a cabriolet of some sort? If so, do you have a suitable vehicle for such exploits?

    Curious property of pipe

Nice pipe! Maybe the bowl coating or exterior stain has some iron in it?

    Top 3 Straight Virginias

I think GH Brown Twist is the only straight Virginia without perique or flavorings that I've smoked - and it's definitely one of my favorites.

    More Frustration W/SG Flakes

I recently had some similarly dried out Hansom Flake that I was concerned about because it was so dry and hard. I decided to rehydrate it just enough so that it was workable again, to be able to rub it and separate the chunks enough to be able to fill the pipe. It was still fairly dry, but not...
