I don't normally smoke aromatics other than those produced by Gawith, so I'm probably not much help here, but my favorties are:
GH Brown Flake Aromatic
GH Coniston cut plug
GH Dark Flake Aromatic
I prefer Medico filters for my cobs and other pipes that take a 6 mm filter. They are probably the least intrusive in regards to the draw and the flavor, but they definitely soak up the moisture and keep the smokestream and airway cleaner. They're also the cheapest.
All of the above, whatever strikes my fancy when it's smoking time. If it's whiskey, though, I usually water it down a bit or have a glass of ice water alongside.
1. Carter Hall
2. Mixture 79
3. Prince Albert
4. Missouri Meerschaum American Patriot
5. Sir Walter Raleigh Aromatic
6. G. L. Pease Telegraph Hill
7. Old Joe Krantz
Any extras might be anything that sounds interesting from Watch City, Kramer's, Sutliff, Ken Byron, etc.
I have used the Dr Perl Jr 6mm filters, they do a good job with very wet tobacco. They also tend to slow the draw substantially, and don't always fit some of my 6mm pipes (quite snug). I generally prefer paper filters like Medico.
Also a big fan of this shape, so much so that the first two pipes I purchased were zulus - a Barling and a Savanelli 404. The Sav is one of my very favorites. I should get a couple more. And one of the Pete's too.
I'm smoking some GH Brown Flake Aro in my favorite wee Medico dublin. I managed to dry it out enough and it's just glorious. With a hefe/limonata radler to keep things interesting!
I've used the Dr Perl 6 mm charcoal filters in my cobs and Savinelli, and they do fit tightly. The balsa sticks are good for absorbing moisture. I mostly use paper filters, though.
