***What Are You Smoking, June 2022?***

Started the day with some vintage Sugar Barrel in a Missouri Pride cob; now smoking OGS in the same.

Top Five Concerts You Wish You'd Been At?

I had tickets to see Linton Kwesi Johnson, the great 'dub poet' back in the '80s in LA when he toured with Dennis Bovell's crack band. Only problem was I showed up the day after the concert happened. Man, I was pissed! So that's one. Rite of Spring premiere would be another. Doors, and maybe...

    Your Go-To Virginia

OGS, Glengarry Flake, and a couple of VaPers like LNF, Hansom Flake, and Drexel VIII.

    Alternatives to Whiskey & Pipe

I find that sweeter, malty brown beers often go very nicely with many tobaccos. Also sweet liqueurs like Kahlua, Irish Mist, Drambouie, etc. They are lower in alcohol than whiskey and not as hard on the mouth.

    Smoking Jacket

While living and working in Mexico, I became aware that other cultures use 'smoking' as a generic term for what most of us in the US would call a tuxedo jacket, and to distinguish this from the type of formal wear many call 'tails.' I used both regularly in my line of work back then. Here's an...

Is There A Lighter That Doesn't Leak?

Beauty, eh! I mean the pipe.

    Coniston Cut Plug

? I know, sorry - I struggled with that myself. I don't know, to me it's similar to that of long roasted meat or something, like a deep umami sort of thing, hard for me to describe (obviously!).

    Coniston Cut Plug

I'm only a few bowls in on my Coniston, but I really really like it. It's got a rich brown flavor, but also with the sweetness from the toppings coming through that blend surprisingly well with the dark fired leaf. A very satisfying smoke for me.

Is There A Lighter That Doesn't Leak?

I've had good luck with the Vertigo Puffer.

***What are You Smoking, April 2022?***

Enjoying Coniston Cut Plug in the Berwyck wire-brushed Dublin, a perfect late-night smoke.

    Virginia Creeper Wood

Plus, it's a vine. I'm no botanist, but I know that the wood of vines is generally quite soft, especially when compared to traditional plant-based pipe materials like briar, olive wood, pear wood, etc. Probably totally unsuitable for handling combustion.

    Recent TAD Pick-Ups

I just picked up an estate pipe from Smokingpipes.com, so I also grabbed a couple of tins of Ennerdale to fill the box. Because why not? They had it!! ?

    G.L Lillehammer

I'm a newly-minted Lillehammer owner, having just acquired this lovely Best Make Dublin estate from Smokingpipes.com. As a person of Norwegian descent, I just couldn't pass up the opportunity to own a bit of Norwegian piping history in one of my favorite shapes!

    Dunhill Flake?

Ahh finally got flake tobacco right!

That's a great, detailed description of the method that I have also found to work really well, @SBC ! I might also add that I've found certain pipes (like dublins with taller conical bowls) seem to lend themselves better to the whole affair. It's not as complicated as one might think it is.

    Best Light Weight Pipes?

Many Grabows are very lightweight and they smoke fine with or without the filters. Medicos too, all in the $30 - $40 range.

    What Was your First Pipe?

This one - a Barling Londoner oval-shanked Dublin that I still use on occasion. I bought it at an independent tobacco shop in a Southern California mall back in the 80's. It's a good smoker.

    "Essential" Blends for a Beginner?

I'm a fairly new smoker myself, and of the roughly 20 + blends that I've tried, a few have really resonated with me to the point that I have returned to them more often than others: Codgers: Granger, SWR VaPers: OGS, LNF Aro: Derby Club English: John Bull RE Lakeland: Glengarry Flake...

    'New' Vintage Dr. Grabow Pipes

I have a few that I smoke regularly. They're handsome, well made, and smoke very well, all of them. Royalton prince: Berwyck dublin: Golden Duke pot: I have a NOS Starfire bulldog incoming, and also a large Hillcrest bent dublin that I've yet to smoke.

Are There any Carey Magic Inch Fans Out There?

I do like mine very much; it has a nice, chunky French-made stummel. Smokes nicely with the sleeve installed.
