    My order arrived

Anyone try either Rattray's Old Gownie or Marlin Flake? Would love to hear some comparisons to HOTW.

    SG~Best Brown Flake

This thread is a little old, but for those still hangin' around: How might BBF mix with something like Solani 633? The latter is just way too heavy on the perique for me. Do you think the combination would result in a milder smoke without weird flavors?

    Samuel Gawith Tobacco Shortage?

Can anyone recommend lower traffic yet reliable sites for ordering tobacco?

    Samuel Gawith Tobacco Shortage?

Yep. A few days ago I received an email from pipesandcigars.com letting me know BBF and FVF were back in stock. Later that day I went to the site to order. They were already sold out. It could not have been more than three hours between the time I received the email and my attempt to to place...

    Sterling Tobacco, anybody smoke it??

Sweet Briar is great! I believe it is a white, flaked burley. Not very moist and will burn all the way down to bowl to a very fine ash. It's aromatic, but not remotely cloying and will not coat the tongue with a nasty aftertaste.

    Looking for a good Virginia

I like mild tasting Vs such as Dunhill Flake, Sillem's Mayor 1814, and Orlik Golden Sliced. I'm really wanting to try SG's FVF and Best Brown Flake.

What Do You Think of Orlick Golden Slices

OGS is solid. It's pretty tame for a Perique blend (compared to, say, Solani's 633). Some may find it less than exciting. But I like reliable, good tasting Virginias that are not overly tart, and this is one of them.

Looking for blends that have the following notes/ingredients:

Lately I've been enjoying Virginia flakes that are not too tart or overly citrusy (think Dunill Flake or Sillem's Mayor 1814 Flake, a current favorite). After rubbing out the flake, I sometimes add a pinch or two of 1-Q and McClelland's Black Cavendish. The result is a very *light* aromatic...

What is your current "go to" or "everyday" smoke?

For me, I'm enjoying several of Uhle's burley blends in the AM. Crushed While Burley, Blend 300, and Blend 00 are all outstanding as far as Burely's go. In the evening: a rubbed Virginia flake (Sillem's Mayor 1814 is what I'm smoking now) with a little cavendish. I probably need to buy a fair...

P&C's University Bulk - Student. An aromatic?

I've really been enjoying this blend, but I confess I'm a little confused about its categorization. Some reviewers over at tobaccoreviews.com describe it "full bodied", and there are conflicting reports about it being an aromatic. While this is a great blend, I don't find it to be particularly...

The (Long) Road to Loving Latakia

I now have two English blends: FMOTT and D's Nightcap (the latter acquired through a recent trade). I'm happy to have them both. Yet every time I light up a bowl, my experience is the same. It's not a single or one-dimensional experience. It involves stages: 1. First few puffs: My God...

    Drink and Pipe

Non-alcoholic: dark roast coffee, diet tonic w/ a splash of sparkling cranberry (surprisingly good with a pipe!), tea (hot or iced) Beer: something hoppy or stout Liquor: a good single malt I should add that I rarely drink alcohol when I smoke.

    tongue bite ?

Charles, Based on your description: maybe. There are lots of essays on this, some of which you'll find on this site (try googling 'tongue bite vs. tongue burn'). Also, you should try (if you have not already) rubbing out the tobacco and letting it sit for an hour before smoking. Also try...

Suddenly, all my tobaccos taste salty, even aros. What gives?

I'll send you something, alright. But it might not be what you're expecting.

Kudos to the folks at pipesandcigars.com

I'm extremely pleased with (and grateful for) this outfit. I just received my order: a reasonably priced tin of Wessex Burley Slice and a big, scrumptious bag of Classic Burley Kake. When placing my order, I mentioned I would love to purchase the University Bulk-Student the next time I'm...

Suddenly, all my tobaccos taste salty, even aros. What gives?

rhogg, Your experience mirrors mine perfectly. I do think, as jchaplick suggested, that this is an effect of perhaps mild tongue burn. Too bad, really, I had all my tobacco orders arrive at the same time. Lot's of stuff from Uhle's and Pipesandcigars.com!

Suddenly, all my tobaccos taste salty, even aros. What gives?

No meds other than nicotine! I had this same experience once I started smoking more routinely last year. I know correlation does not equal causation, but I don't know what else it can be.

Suddenly, all my tobaccos taste salty, even aros. What gives?

This has happened to me on a few occasions now. I've experimented with several pipes, some of which are pretty clean, so I suspect dirty pipes are not the culprits. In any case, I'm tasting something akin to soy sauce in the middle/back of my tongue. This is most noticeable with burleys and...

    Recommend a reasonably priced churchwarden?

Topic title says it all. I'm looking for a reasonably priced Churchwarden--new or estate. Nothing too fancy-just a reliable pipe for smoking hot burning tobaccos. Thanks in advance!
