    Old Gowrie Flavor Profile?

Thanks for the responses. I find HOTW to be a remarkable blend. I can indeed detect the perique, but it comes across as a subtle tang. Any more of a perique presence gets uncomfortable for me. Sounds like I would enjoy OG, too. All the good vendors seem to be out of it!

Smoke for Breakfast - Let's Talk About Blends to Start Your Day

It's Burleys for me! I'm about out of my Classic Burley Kake, and will probably order some Blend 00 from Uhle's soon.

    Old Gowrie Flavor Profile?

I am nearly out of HOTW. I really enjoyed this tobacco once it aged a bit. It has all the perique I can handle (I'm very sensitive to perique, and do not usually care for it unless it is used as a light condiment). How does the flavor of OG compare to HOTW? Is the perique more noticeable?

    Favorite Bourbon Whiskey?

I am a scotch drinker for the most part. But I recently discovered a single malt whiskey that is just wonderful: Balcones, made in Waco, Texas.

    Uhle's Blends - Well, Burley

Huge thumbs up for Uhle's tobaccos. I've tried Perfection Plug, #00, #300, #44, Black Stoker, and Crushed White Burley. 00 and PP are my favorites. Pity about the excessive tax for WI residents. I imagine this kills in-state sales.

Do You Find Yourself Gravitating Toward 'Simpler' Tobaccos?

Nicely put, coalsmoke. I just blew through a bag of McClelland red Virginia cake (#5100). After a year or so of serious pipe smoking, I finally caught on to what simple VAs like this had to offer. I didn't have to try too hard to discern flavors or get too cerebral about something that was meant...

Do You Find Yourself Gravitating Toward 'Simpler' Tobaccos?

I've found myself adhering to the following routine: 1. Burley in the AM (Classic Burley Kake, Storm Front, various burleys from Uhles). 2. Virginia in the PM (McClelland 5100, HOTW). I've put away (for now) the few challenging tobaccos I have. Heavy perique blends are out, as are spicy...

    New Balkan Sobranie

Your father was Frank Fallon?!?!?! I grew up hearing his voice. My father took me to my first Baylor game in the early 70's, and your dad was still announcing games when I was in school. I'm sure we have some mutual friends and acquaintances in Waco. I appreciate the good work you do with the...

    New Balkan Sobranie

Hi Pipestud. I see you reside in Waco, TX. I lived there as a young lad and returned for both my BA and MA (Baylor). I get back to Texas to visit my parents whenever I can afford to bring the whole family. Good to see another Texan, and Wacoan for that matter!

    Rattray's Pipe Tobacco

I've been enjoying HOTW, but prefer something slightly sweeter. I'll be trying OG as soon as I can drop some coin.

    First Smoke of the Day

I love nutty, oat-like flavors. So it's burely for me in the morning. Today I had a blend of 1/2 Carter Hall and 1/2 PS Cube Cut. The latter has always been a bit bitey for me, even when blended. So it may be time to order some burelys from Uhle's. P&C's University Student is a great second...

Burleys and Carter Hall (100th Post)

A few other posters recommended Uhle's Burleys. And--if you like Burley--they're terrific. Blend 00 and Perfection Plug Burley might be the best I've had. Sterling's Double Eagle is great, too. But as I recall it was a bit sweet for me. Oh--let me revise my previous statement about the best...

    Not an Aromatic Fan, However!

I wasn't wild about the loose cut, although I've been told the flake is better. As far as vanilla aromatics go, I do like McClelland's Vanilla Black Cavendish. Has anyone had chance to compare this with the MacBaren (the flake)?

FM "On the Town" vs. FM "Cellar"

Been a while since I've posted. Good to read posts from familiar folks. Some time ago I tried my first English blend: FMOTT. I simply could not adapt to the latakia. I really, really tried. I won't say what sort of associations I was (involuntarily) making with this particular blend. Please...

Can anyone tell me about this pipe (1980 Dunhill Collector)?

A few years ago I came into possession of my dear uncle's modest pipe collection. Among them are several Dunhills from the 70s and 80s. One in particular feature that is a mystery to me is the indented bowl. Pics with markings are included here. I would appreciate any insight as to the...

Questions about John Patton's 'Storm Front'

OK. I ordered 4 ounces of SF, and I'm smoking my first bowl. I should have ordered more. It smells and tastes exactly as advertized: quality cube cut burley with cigar leaf (the latter being pretty mild, but certainly noticeable). As you can image, it is a perfect mix of sweet and smokey...

Can you recommend "creamy", non-spicy Virginias?

Thanks for the suggestions. I've ordered McL. 5100, and I'll be trying MB V#1. I think my standard has become FVF, and I'd love to find an inexpensive and accessible version of this in bulk form.

    Stokkebye Burley

Like others, I've had PS cube cut. I *love* the smell and flavor, but it bites like hell. I like to mix it with some Carter Hall for a good, less bitey codger experience.

Can you recommend "creamy", non-spicy Virginias?

Perique-heavy blends are pretty spicy to me, as are those with a fair mount of Kentucky (e.g.,Solani 660).

Can you recommend "creamy", non-spicy Virginias?

While I've been a serious pipe smoker for only 7 months now, I've drawn the following conclusions: 1. I just can't enjoy latakia blends. I can't, I can't, I can't. I've tried. But the dark side just has no appeal for me. 2. American style Burleys are awesome, and I was stupid to scoff at...
