    It's Burley Christmas Madness!!

I should have stashed away our cash in order to pay future bills, my my wife insisted I treat myself to a new pair of shoes and some pipe tobacco. Here is my Christmas order, which I feel compelled to share: 1. PS cube cut burley. This has become my inexpensive, go-to smoke. 2. H&H Classic...

does anyone ever blend to reduce bite?

Hi jud. With this blend, I really think it is the alkalinity of the tobacco that I am reacting to. I'll try rubbing and drying and see what happens.

does anyone ever blend to reduce bite?

I'm crazy about the flavor of PS's cube cut, but it does bite. Would the addition of a light burley (such as Lane's Burley Light) reduce the bite? Or would the presence of the CC result in the same sort of bite regardless of what it is blended with?

Another FMOTT query. What am I tasting?

Bbauer, I think I may turn out to be--at best--an occasional English smoker as well. At this point I appreciate FMOTT more than I like it.

Another FMOTT query. What am I tasting?

Her appreciation for the room note was short lived. While smoking a recent bowl, she said: "Ya know, I really *don't* like the smell of that stuff. Smells a little fecal." And that, I suppose, is what you veterans call a "lat bomb"? In any case, I really love the cool smoke and interesting...

Solani 633 - Age before opening?

I confess I could not resist. I popped the tin open this evening! I rubbed out a flake and let it sit for an hour. This flake corroborates my growing love for Virginias. I understand fully why some find them acerbic and harsh. But for some reason my palate finds them tangy and, well, pure...

    MacBaren vanilla cream flake

I have the loose cut as well. I'm no longer a strict aromatic smoker-far from it. But I still *love* good quality vanillas, and this one is my favorite. I wish I had gotten the flake, but the loose cut (in a 100g tin) was (and still is) being offered for a great price at smokingpipes.com.

    Matching bacs with bowls

This last summer I inherited 40+ quality pipes from a dear uncle. I've been suffering from a serious TAD ever since! I'm trying to organize my pipes into a sensible smoking rotation, and I'm a little frustrated with wider bowls. It is harder to keep them lit, and I imagine most people will...

    MacBarens 7 seas?

These things are invariably a matter of personal preference. But the Gold didn't do much for me (I would certainly give it another try, of course). The Royal, however, is excellent. It's heavier on the Burley/Cavensish, whereas Gold is heavier on the Va (I think).

    Desperately need help here

Nsfisher, I know what you mean. The "higher-end" stuff can be jolting for those used to OTC blends, some of which is very good. I've recently had the experience your having. But here is what happened (or is happening). Once I went back to more familiar blends, I found myself being critical...

Does Lane Ltd. make a cube cut Burley?

I like it. A no-nonsense smoke that may be a bit one- dimensional for some. It is sweet, cool smoke that I will probably use as a condiment with other blends. Smoking it now with some MB's Golden Extra.

Solani 633 - Age before opening?

Ohin, I actually bought a tin of this based on a description you gave of it on another thread.

What would you blend with Lane's 'Burley Light..."?

So I picked up a few ounces of several bulk Burleys from the B&M. Lane's BLWB was one of them. I've heard this can be blended with other tobaccos. Could this mellow the cloying nature of certain aromatics? Could it complement Englishes? With what would you blend this light burley?

Does Lane Ltd. make a cube cut Burley?

Scratch that. I think what I picked up was a cube cut by Peter Stokkebye (although it could well be LL's "Special Cube Cut"; can't tell). Smooth and pleasant, but not too exciting. Nice not to have any bite, which is what I was trying to avoid!

Does Lane Ltd. make a cube cut Burley?

I was going through the bulk tobaccos at my B&M and came across a cube cut burley that I purchased on the basis of its smell and texture. I think it is a LL tobacco. Anyone familiar with this?

Brand & Blend suggestions for those susceptible to bite?

I'm finding that I am very sensitive to tongue bite. This is frustrating because I've tried various blends that, while delicious to me, can be uncomfortable to smoke. While I do better with Burleys and FMOTT (the only English I've smoked) I do love the taste of both lightly cased Virginias and...

Newbie update and plea for help

Hello fellow newbie. The same thing recently happened to me. My tongue was sore and everything had an aftertaste that I can only describe as 'soy sauce.' Also, virginias and even some Burleys (especially those made by Mac Baren and McClelland) do bite unless I am very careful, and smoking them...
