This has happened to me on a few occasions now. I've experimented with several pipes, some of which are pretty clean, so I suspect dirty pipes are not the culprits. In any case, I'm tasting something akin to soy sauce in the middle/back of my tongue. This is most noticeable with burleys and aros.
I suspect this is a result of tongue burn, from which I am recovering.
Has anyone else had this experience?

Futureman. It did happen to me a couple of times about a month or so ago. I did two things that helped me.
1) Treat as if it's tongue burn

The whole lay off the pipe for a couple of days, biotene several times a day, the whole drill

2) Change blend

I laid off the different blends in a row until I found what I believe to be the culprit. In my case, Latakia. It's weird but as soon as I smoked anything with heavy Latakia, the tongue would just go leathery, salty, raw, irritated. When I don't... no issues. So for the last three weeks I've smoked nothing heavy on the Lat and I have had no issues.
You could have the same with something in one of the blends perhaps ? But it doesn't sound like you have a hurt tongue.. just a salty taste ? Does your tongue feel as if you just sipped a really hot cup of coffee, or a hot fried pepper ? That's what mine felt like.
So if you're not experiencing the same thing, there's more experienced guys out here that are probably more apt to help you. :puffpipe:

Your tongue is dying. You need to send all your pipes and baccy to me to save yourself. Do it now, before it is too late.

I have this problem when my tongue is burned, it is accentuated if my tongue is burned AND i smoke too fast and hot. I am not trying to say you dont know what your doing haha, I think I do but I smoke too fast all the time. That always makes some baccys taste salty to me.
For tongue burn use biotene mouth wash after every smoke and several times during the day and try to cut your smoking by at least half.
This is my routine when it happens to me

I had a similar issue shortly after taking up the piep. To me it was a sour taste if I remember describing it correctly. Soy sauce would be a accurate description from what I can gauge. I was smoking all aromatocs at the time. It was so severe for me that I abandoned aros for the most part. When I first started smoking those tobacco I could taste the sugar like candy in smoke form, but still to this day I no longer can. Maybe it just took me a month to realise that I didn't,t like then flavorings. Hard to say really. I cleaned all my pipes thouroughly and quit smoking for a week. I no longer get the sour note, but don't smoke many aros anymore. Hope your situation is not as complicated as mine. I gave up trying to get advice because it seemed my experience was unique.

Biotene ...hmmmm. I've always been a Listerine guy and when my current bottle is finished I was going to switch to their non-alcohol type now that I am smoking and using more frequently. I had read that smokers shouldn't use the alcohol types. While I haven't experienced severe tongue burn as of yet, the biotene web site info sounds good. Thanks for the tip!

rhogg,
Your experience mirrors mine perfectly. I do think, as jchaplick suggested, that this is an effect of perhaps mild tongue burn. Too bad, really, I had all my tobacco orders arrive at the same time. Lot's of stuff from Uhle's and Pipesandcigars.com!

So, this means I get nothing? A guy has go to try.
OK, I had this happen to me years and years ago, and it wasn't just tobacco, everything tasted like sour milk. I stopped smoking for a week, brushed my tongue every morning with water and baking soda and then picked up a pipe. It was heaven. I had been smoking a heap of Lat back then and that is how I learned to smoke s l o w l y. It never came back. That was is '76 or so.

that happens to me every once in a while I just gargle with Peroxide and Biotene and brush my tongue well. That usually helps me.

I seem to have lost a lot of my sour taste sense when I started smoking again. I've always loved sour fruit candy, but I don't taste much sour from them any more.
