How About the All-Black Pipe, Visually

I love black pipes - particularly smooth ones and have a number of them in my collection including a Dunhill Dress billiard, a Castello La Perla Nera Apple and a really cool flat black finish Brebbia that I’ve never seen anywhere else?? The glossy black on my Peterson Killarney black pipes...

Low Country Pipe Club - Monday Meeting

Hey @CoffeeAndBourbon! Would love to have you check it out. Attendance was fantastic today and after a brief poll, it looks like Monday's work well for nearly everyone - so, we're going to shift to the first Monday of each Month (barring a holiday) and see if this continues to be helpful. The...

Low Country Pipe Club - Monday Meeting

Good evening all - the Low Country Pipe Club shuffled its usual schedule for July due to both the holiday weekend and to provide an opportunity to some members who have not been able to make it on the usual day. We’ll be meeting tomorrow (Monday July 11th) at the usual 10:00am at the...

    Bowl after a Big Meal?

Even as I trend 95/5 in favor of pipe smoking these days, after a big, heavy meal I prefer a cigar. I concur with the OP on PSD4 as a great choice but lean toward a Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No.2 as my preferred. Pipe wise, I’ll second the Key Largo recommendation and add G.L. Pease Kensington...

    Gaslight - Lots of Relights

Gaslight has given me more burn trouble than pretty much any other tobacco in a 30+ year pipe smoking career. My technique is pretty well locked in for each tobacco type and honestly any bowl is essentially cruise control to the bottom these days. But Gaslight… Even fresh G&H flakes burn like...

    C&D Old and New

I’m at the point in my cellar where I’m smoking through 2009-2012 tins of C&D & G.L. Pease pretty regularly. I’m aware that after this era is exhausted from the cellar that it will be the end of the “fish food” cut. I probably enjoy the burn & pack qualities of the newer tins with their...

    Pipe Size Preferences?

1.5” chamber depth is my favorite and I’ll take the entire range in chamber diameter. A few shallower options for strong tabac or extremely slow burning flakes - and just a handful of tall bowls pretty much exclusively for dry ribbon cuts (think Orion’s Arrow, Bayou Morning, Stratfordshire etc.)

What Cigar are You Smoking? - 2022

All these years on the forum and I’ve never posted to this thread - probably because my cigar smoking has dropped to about a dozen a year for the past decade. A recent sale of the bulk of my collection has my taste sparked again and I skipped my second bowl of the day for this old beauty. 2012...

    C&D Briar Fox Thoughts?

@Steddy with the “rookie win”! Nice review - you nailed it.

    A Set I Thought I'd Never Find

Superb find - and such a satisfying step in your search! That grain too… wow! Congrats man.

    Key Largo?

While I’d give the nod to Key Largo, I’ve really enjoyed my first tin of C&D Awakened Elder - there are certainly similarities.

    Which Pipe would You Choose?

I’ll second @trouttimes Upshall recommendation - great pipes. I’ve only owned three, and don’t recall @cigrmaster’s experience - but have def had some bitter stems on a few other individual pipes of different makes. Keeping the oxidation off the stem surface goes a long way toward muting that...

    Replacement Recommendations

Probably not “great” alignment with your search, but I remember my first tin of G.L. Pease Lagonda - with a little over 4 yrs of age on it brought Blue Mountain to mind. It will likely be an enjoyable trial even if it leaves something to be desired in the similarity category. I haven’t smoked it...

    Sutliff Apple Flavor

While I tend to struggle smoking anything with notable amounts of PG (aromatic or not) which effectively keeps me out of most of the Sutliff line, the recent sale on Low Country blends at SPC reminded me that they have a Virginia Based aromatic; Santee I believe, which has at least a mild apple...

Are Latakia Blends Better on the Moist Side?

I’m in the opposite camp. I like my English / Balkan blends approaching crispy, VA flakes fairly dry but pliable, and recently have come to the conclusion that I prefer my lakelands at full moisture.

Your Response when the Nicotine Hits

Some of that C&D Red VA really packs a punch! I just finished a tin of 2014 G.L. Pease Embarcadero and kept thinking; “Can it really be this strong?!?” Really brought the power each bowl.

    Old Reviews

If you happen to find yourself in a position of owning some well aged blends it’s also interesting to go back and read reviews from the era your blend was tinned and compare your experience current day. ?

    Under-Appreciated Pipe Brands Redux

The Israeli made Alphas from the 70’s & 80’s coming out of the Shalom factory are some of my favorites. Great engineering & normally wonderful tasting briar, but the stems / bits can be clunky. I’ve got a bunch of them in my collection and love the smoking consistency. The later version made in...

How Many Bowls In a Tin?

I’ve been tracking my smokes for years and using mostly Dunhill Grp 4 size bowls, and pack full to the top and fairly firm, I avg 18-19 bowls for a 50gr tin of ribbon cut, about 21-22 bowls per 2oz tin of the same and slightly less for flake & crumble cake tobacs. The GH & SG flakes seem to...

Favorite First of the Day Smoke

Like the OP, my favorite pipe is the first of the day. Living in the Atlantic coast, I’m up early and greet the sun most mornings this time of year. While I haven’t participated in WAYS thread for the past month or so, I pretty much post immediately before or after @judcole and chuckle at how...
