Variations on Pipe Mud - Tip for Alternative Ash

I’ve experimented with a number of concoctions but they all work. For those who don’t smoke cigars I’ve found this one to be very useful. A mixture of Elmer’s multi purpose glue, Briar dust and Charcoal dust mixed into a black paste. Apparently, Elmer’s glue is an organic material and when...

    Antique Store Finds

You’ll appreciate the challenge. It’s a lot of fun. I really enjoy it.

    Broken Shank Repair

Lots of caution taking that apart to clean. Do NOT be surprised if it breaks again. George has the ticket. I’ve used a small piece of stainless steel tubing in those. If a larger OD is needed a piece of aluminum tubing will work.

    Marxman badge

Might be a tough find. You may check some other marxmans to see if you can salvage a badge. If you can’t find one you can drop a little white latex paint there; and dream your smoking a Dunhill. ;)

    Which Oxiclean To Use?

Either way you lose vulcanite. heres the trick with oxy. You DONT want to soak too long. Oxy has worked well on many pipes, but you can’t soak and forget. I’ve used it for no more than 20-30 min. Also I mask any logos with thick hockey tape. You can sand with some 400 grade sandpaper, then...

    Repairing Cracked Button?

Mendable. But for this I’d check out what George D posted. The stuff is marvellous for larger areas. @georged...

    Internal Damage to the Pipe?

Maple syrup or honey. Coat the bowl. Dump in some charcoal from the health food store. Leave it for a couple of hours. Now dump out the charcoal and let that pipe sit for about a week.

    Fun with Stain

Terrific job. I have a number of Stanwells and tried duplicating the lighter stain they used, mixing brown and yellow. I never got it just right. Fun project though.

    Adhesive for Meerschaum

Nice pipe for display. I would clean it up the best you can, and any CA glue would do. Since it’s not going to be smoked I’d still be cautious with the amount of glue to be used. Avoid any kind of run off on the outside. A thicker glue I’d recommend is the gorilla CA. After the glue you could...

    Adjusting Stem Fit

Exactly. Years ago I was going to buy a Meer, but knew it was slightly overclocked, much like the Kaywoodies were. I much prefer the push pull. If I had a Meer like this I might try a conversion.

    Upshall B Refurb

Nice work. Terrific work on the pipe.

    Restoring Logos and buffing stems

Any Kind of pipe cleaning solution, and there are many including oxy will take a certain amount of vulcanite off. When I use oxy I use thick plumbing grease on the logo. I’ve been successful up to a 1 hour soak. Conversley I’ve used magic erasure pads. When sanding I use thick clear hockey tape...

Problem with CA glue and carbon

In the case of selling, full disclosure is my practice. If the, pipe is mine of course I would not.

    Carnauba

The chips have a very low melting temp. Pop your chips in the microwave into a pourable dish. Then pour into a plastic container shaped like a puck. When all is cool you’ll find the puck will pop out, and Bobs Your Uncle.

    What Would You Suggest?

Practice your techniques if you want. I like saving stuff. Grind down the stem for vulcanite, and the briar for other repairs. It’s a donor pipe.

    Brigham Acorn clean up

This Brigham 2 dot was dirty and tired looking. The stem was in very good shape. More on the stem later. After reaming there a number of heat fissures. I applied a thin layer of JB weld, then some maple syrup, and powdered carbon. The stem is a question. You’ll notice the two dots are very...

    Cracked My Paykoc

Sorry about the breakage. That type of Meer is susceptible to temp extremes. The block meers I smoke in colder weather with no problems. As mentioned an inner tube is the fix. Meer absorbs a lot, but actually a white glue with the inner tube would be my fix. Also any kind of clear ca. the...

    Chamber Repair Mud Vs. Waterglass

Thanks Rustie. Very clear explanation. I have used the combo on an old Stanwell.

Problem with CA glue and carbon

Rustie, I have a question. As I mentioned I’m going with the gflex, but the dye by the same manufacturer is extremely expensive. $60 for a small bottle. Could I use a more economical dye from another manufacturer To use with gflex. Thanks for your response.

Royal Danish. Great price and great smokers. They are Stanwell seconds I believe.
