    BST Pipe

Hey Todd. Are you still doing pipes. Went to the website and it looks like your still busy. There’s a wonderful Rhodesian bent in your gallery, gone a long time ago. I presume you’re still taking orders. -Bill

    My First Stanwell

Back in the day, 35 years or so, the neighbouring pipe shop in Saskatoon, Sk sold primarily Stanwells, so basically that’s all I smoked and collected. All I have is Stan’s and Brigham. Stanwell never seemed to disappoint. Thats a beautiful pipe! Happy puffing.

    Meerschaum Sure Colors Weirdly

I believe that coffee can be used for dye. One can also paint it, or let some sit in the bottom of the bowl (that’s if you like that colour of brown). coffee is used as a colorant on bone beads as well. Im not aware of anything inert that can be used for colouring. Interesting thread.

My First Meerschaum: A Peterson 999

Correct. I’ve managed to grab a couple of African Meers over time. They don’t color. The best way to clean is a toothbrush and 99% iso alcohol. They’re very durable and almost all have a push/pull stem. I like them a lot. Sometimes you can get one for $100.

    Limited Edition Lee Star Grades

Well, now I find myself wanting to restore one. There’s a few on the bay, but rather banged up.

    Limited Edition Lee Star Grades

Lee’s have to be going for $50 after the amount of threads I’ve read on this magical, oil cured, indestructible, sweet smoking, no fills Lees.

Ruminations on the Stain of a Lee

Well! I’ll have to snatch one up before Mr. Briar Lee buys them all. I’m looking for a banged up one to restore.

Pipes Keep Slipping Out of Clench

You could go with some silicone tape. It comes in black. Holds bite marks. It’s great stuff. I use 3 to 5 wraps around the pipe. Great for clinchers and even better for stem protection.

Nice To See Smokingpipes Showing Some Love To Brigham

Being a Canadian, I love Brighams. I have 4 of them. Sometimes I use a filter and sometimes not. They always afforded me a great smoke at a very affordable price.

    Sanding an Old Friend

True statement. I feel you know what I mean though.

    Sanding an Old Friend

For the OP. 99% alcohol, soaking for 12 hours will take the grime, old wax, and a little color off the pipe. On the stem you can use the flame method, or a little oxy and water, the n magic eraser, then a little sanding with 10,000 to 12,000 micro mesh pads. Back to the bowl. After drying the...

    Petroleum/Diesel Smell in New(ish) Vauen Pipe ??

Glad it worked for you Hillcrest. I was ready to suggest an alcohol bath overnight.

A Worn Out Star Grade Lee

I think that might be a stress fracture. If one would unscrew the stem just a bit and apply pressure that would crack the shank. Other than that the salt and alcohol *might* have done it, but you’d have to have the salt and alcohol mixture in the shank. The crack is quite fixable. In fact the...

    Pipe Mud question

I’ve also heard a thick mix of plain yogurt, and ash will to the trick.

    Rescuing a Culver

Very, very good job. Especially on the stem. Terrific. I was in a pinch with a terrible stem with holes, so I used JB Weld. It dries inert, but it dries grey. Since that part of the stem was in my mouth anyway I didnt care. It did the trick. But I would use black crazy glue.

Pipes Never Smoked Down to the Bottom

If you want to form a nice cake close to the bottom, don’t dump your pipe out as you work thru the bowl. Keep on tamping down until you smoke down to the dottle. I’ve found this layers the carbon nicely. I’ve also found the tried and true method does work. Half a bowl smoked slowly. I usually...
