    Brigham Pipes

I like Brighams being Canadian. Mine are great smokers, but I never use the filter.

    Do Stingers really work

There probably isn’t a day goes by when I’m not digging out a stinger in a KW or other brand. I can understand how stingers we’re supposed to work, but did they really do the job. Did stingers offer a cooler, less moist smoke. Refurbing there’s a plethora of different designs, and stingers, and...

What Protective Coating is on Factory Pipes?

I’d say a thin coating of shellac. Easily removed with an acetone soak, or acetone and make up pads.

    Cracked shank fixable?

If the crack opens and closes when the stem is inserted, drizzle some thin CA glue in the crack, then let the crack close. After the glue is dry a ferrule would help.

Any Particular Paint to Restore Stem Markings?

Acrylic nail polish. Add a dab to the imprint. Let dry, scrap the remaining with a toothpick. Conversley a white Crayon can be used in the same way. -Bill

Stupid question about sanding the bit

If you do a lot of it get a set of small files.

Buffing/Polishing Compounds to Use with Buffing Machine?

Great set up @MilesDavis. Incidentally I sent a PM with a question.

    Is This Burnout?

I think it’s starting to burn out. IMO your smoking the pipe way too hot and perhaps a little fast. The tell tale sign would be inside the bowl. Ream your bowl and use a little sandpaper on that side or all sides. Grap a flashlight and take a good look. If there’s charring, try to remove that...

That old Estate flavor and smell

Shank brush with Murphys oil soap first. Cool water rinse. Then Iso alcohol and cue tips. I have a mini screwdriver that I used to use for glasses and ground a little spatula at the end to drag stuff out.

Restorers. Anybody tried wood filler for fills?

For those following the thread I’ve got a project on pipe fills. Preparing a pdf for those interested. The leader so far is Lepages plastic wood. it stains well. All water clean up products have failed. Pic of the product.

Restorers. Anybody tried wood filler for fills?

Thanks Buffalo. I’m experimenting with a number of products for stainable fill and minwax appears to be good. There are many that say that the minwax product will not stain, but the jury is out. Question … I wonder what pipe manufacturers use as fills? I’ve researched but can’t find the answer...

Restorers. Anybody tried wood filler for fills?

The problem it seems for fills is the dark color produced when mixing briar and ca glue. Then the pipe is stained to match the fills. Usually a dark stain has to be selected to match the fill. I’m wondering if anyone has used a product for fills other than briar and ca glue. Theres lots of...

A Meer-lined Grabow. What to Do?

Not perfect by any stretch, but the pipe is lighter with some nice grain.

A Much Cratered Seville With a Surprise

That fella was on the brink and you brought it back. Great work!

A Meer-lined Grabow. What to Do?

Well we finally made it. I filled the floor with some JB Weld, coated with Plaster of Paris as suggested. Made initial cuts with a dremel. Sanded a lot. Just have to add a bowl coating of sour cream and charcoal. Should be good to go. The pipe is still a bit heavy. I attribute that to the...

    A Medico Brylon

Actually I ground some of it up for fill powder. its a red powder now.

    A Medico Brylon

Thanks @anotherbob I found a thread on it. I think I might just grind it up and see if there’s anything I can use for restoration.

    A Medico Brylon

I’ve got a Medico Brylon stummel, which is impervious to any kind of stripping. Went through the works including acetone. Maybe there’s some decent briar underneath it. Im not sure if it’s worth working over and restoring. I gather these would smoke rather hot. Many thanks, Bill

To sand or not to sand? (briar bowl inside)

You can sand the inside of the bowl a bit if you want. But I’d just smoke it. Wipe it out with alcohol and continue.
