What are You Watching? [2023] Please Rate 1-5

I recorded the old Death Valley Days series that was rerun on a cable channel. They were filmed in black and white in the early 50s. Two that I watched this evening were filmed in 1953. The Old Ranger, who introduces each story is generally smoking a pipe, a full bent usally. He smokes different...

    Going Through My Closet

I don't donate to Goodwill anymore, not so much because of their politics, but because they have gotten so picky about what they will accept. Certain household items and clothing that they think they have plenty of, they won't take. Understandable I guess but it's annoying to have someone pick...

    Going Through My Closet

Personally I think that's it characteristic of age. Young bulls are slim and muscular and old bulls are much heavier. If you have ever seen a young bull and an old bull fight, that old bull knows how to use his weight to defeat that young bull.

How my Pipe Buckets Fill Up

Coffee might be cheaper than pipes if you make your own or coffee at home, but if you buy it at Starbucks or Dutch Brothers it can cost you $5 plus per cup! That's roughly about $150 a month for coffee. For that price I can buy a decent estate pipe and a month's worth of tobacco every month.

    The Perfect EDC Knife

Benchmade's Mini Bugout is a nice size EDC, I'm sure your son will be happy with it. That's one I have considered recently, just haven't pulled the trigger yet. Here are some of my Benchmade EDCs. A tanto Griptillian, 2 Mini Griptillians, a 940 and a sheepfoot slip joints with S30V steel.

    Going Through My Closet

Great topic! It reminds me that I need to clean out my closet, my wife has been after me to do that, because she needs more closet space! LOL I have some nice business / casual shirts that I haven't worn much since I retired. They are starched and hanging in the closet with the plastic from the...

    The Perfect EDC Knife

Here are some of my Kershaw EDCs. This grouping are all Leeks. The top what is the standard metal handle with a partially serrated blade . The third one has a Damascus steel blade. The fourth one down is a black handle with a fine Edge blade. The 5th and 6th knives have the black handle, each...

    The Perfect EDC Knife

I have been a knife collector for 40 years and really into it for the last 20 years. I also collect pipes, I probably have 60 or 70 pipes but I have far more knives. I stopped counting how many knives I had when I reached 2000+ I really didn't want to know how many I had, that way I could...

    Lifespan of Pipe Smokers

My grandfather grew up on the ranch near New Pine Creek Oregon. He started smoking when he was 6 years old. He was a heavy smoker and died at age 86. Mostly he smoked cigarettes, but he also smoked a pipe. He died from lung cancer, and I'm sure his doctors would tell anyone who asked that his...

    Who is Doug Valitchka?

I have bought several pipes from Doug without any problems. I have been satisfied with the pipes and didn't find any what I would call intentional errors in his listings. I have been considerably more satisfied with pipes I purchased from him, more so then from many of the other eBay sellers.

Quite a Pipe - Completed Auction

I thought the OP looked like Ismail Ozel's work. He actually came to an RTDA show here in the US in the 1980s. A company brought him to the show and was promoting his work, I think it was Royal Meerschaum. In their booth they displayed an enormous pipe Ismail had carved, I think it was Anthony...

What Tobaccos do You Not Cellar?

I only cellar Virginia Flakes and VA/PER flakes or rounds. I only cellar ones that I like fresh, or ones that I can tell by tasting will most likely improve with age. I worked for the fellow in the 1980s who smoked Dunhill light flake, but only after it had two or three years of age on it. I...

What Retired Blends Would you Bring Back?

Would love to see some of the dark Virginia flakes from yesteryear such as Dunhill dark flake and Capstan full. There were a couple others also, but I can't recall their names at the moment. They had full rich flavor with a fair amount of strength to them. I find myself wanting that flavor and...

    Favorite Virginia Tobaccos?

My go to Virginia tobacco has been Capstan blue flake since the 1980s. When it became unavailable in the US I stopped smoking. Now that it's available again, I have been smoking it, but have found many other Virginia flakes that I also enjoy. Wessex gold slice, Charatan Flake and Fribourg &...

    Pipe Stem is Sticking

I occasionally encounter a tight stem. I think it is generally due to temperature and humidity. I use Everclear and pipe cleaners, cotton swabs, etc, to remove the tar build up. If I still have a problem I use a graphite pencil all around the tendon. A regular number two pencil works fairly...

    Comoy's "Woodstock" Patina Restoration.

Impressive work! I may have to do that on some of my old pipes.

    Filling Bite Marks on Stems

I have a couple of old pipes that have some deep toothprints in the stem, I think they were previously owned by an alligator! The G Flex sounds like a good solution. I have used similar products in knife repair and they were quite satisfactory. I'm going to have to order some G Flex and colorant.

    Custom fit mouthpiece

I have heard it said many years ago, that the way to tell the difference between a hand cut stem and a pre-molded stem is that the hand cuts stem has rounded corners in the opening at the end of the stem. I suppose that could be faked by filing out the square corners with a round Jeweler's file...

***What Are You Smoking, November 2023?***

I have seen that type of staining before on the paper liners of tins of tobacco that have been aged for several years in the tin. Most of the time, it is a good sign of a well aged tobacco. However I have also seen rust develop on the tin, which can impart a bad taste to the tobacco. As long as...
