What Would You Do? Last Bowl...

I help set up Cascade Cigaar and Tobacco 1992. Their first store was in Milwaukee Oregon but they have later added several stores. I don't remember the original blend list but Lane HGL is probably what it was, or something very similar. After I left, they hired another well known Tobacconist who...

    Capstan Gold Navy Cut

I don't know the name of the shop in the Embarcadero, was it Telford's? I believe Telford's closed, at least I thought I had heard that. As I recall there was another smoke shop on the south side of Geary Street a little West of Union Square. I spent about a year around the Bay Area in 1972-...

    Buyer Beware

That is good to know, thank you. If we see a lot of misinformed or unknowledgeable sellers in the pocket knife hobby as well. I believe someone made the point earlier in this thread about knowing the dealer your buying from. That is good advice with pocket knives as well.

    Buyer Beware

The way it usually happens with pocket knives is that the markings are changed so that the knife appears to be a far more expensive knife that it actually is. I'm not sure if this could be done with a pipe, but if the stampings on the shank could be duplicated on a unbranded pipe that might be...

    Buyer Beware

Well said! I have bought one pipe on eBay, and that just recently. Haven't finished cleaning it yet to where I'm satisfied with it, but I don't expect any problems, it wasn't expensive to begin with. I have never sold anything on eBay, but I have bought probably 1500-2000 pocket knives and...

    Buyer Beware

Great thread, I'm learning a lot that I didn't know about repairs.. I am looking for a good pipe repairman. I was cleaning some of my pipes this evening and my last one was a Comoy Everyman sandblast billiard. The stem originally had a metal fitment with leather washers on it, but I detest metal...

    Capstan Gold Navy Cut

My all-time favorite non filter cigarette with Virginia tobacco was an English import called Mitchell's Sovereign Gold Flake, at least that's as I remember the name, (I may have part of the name wrong). They were a short cigarette the size of Camel non filter and came in a flat box of 20. They...

    Capstan Gold Navy Cut

In the 1980s Players Navy Cut cigarettes were made by Phillip Morris in the US. As I remember it, the brand was discontinued when the US government started setting maximum nicotine levels for the total of a company's products. Players Navy Cut was a non filter and also had the highest...

    Beginner Perspective of Peterson's Nightcap

My mistake, I referred to C&D Three Friars as Three Brothers.

    Beginner Perspective of Peterson's Nightcap

As a tobacconist in 1980s when Dunhill was making Nightcap, I would not have recommended it to a new pipe smoker. In fact I rarely recommended any English blend to a new smoker unless they thought it smelled particularly good in the jar. I found most new smokers likes something mild and at least...

    Capstan Original Navy Flake (Blue)

That's really reasonable considering only a 30 cent per bowl difference. I live in the Pacific Northwest where people routinely pay $5 plus per cup of coffee sometimes multiple times a day. And I do find coffee enjoyable and indulge in it myself on occasion though not nearly as often since I...

    Capstan Original Navy Flake (Blue)

Absolutely, I agree, there is a huge difference between a fresh tin of Capstan and one that has a few years of age on it. I haven't aged any of the tobacco made by Mac Barron's, but I imagine it would Age nicely, most Virginia flakes do. Capstan Blue, (or Capstan Medium as it was usually called...

    Capstan Original Navy Flake (Blue)

Speaking of Captan, I have a collection of tins from over the years, mostly from the 1980s and '90s. This picture shows the graphics that changed on the Capstan blue tins, the earliest being to the left of the picture and the last ones I bought around 2000 is on the right of the picture, at...

    Capstan Original Navy Flake (Blue)

Great analogy with the bands and albums! Continuing with that analogy I would say that Capstan Blue would be one of my favorite bands/ albums that I would listen to frequently. Just like with music, I do like a variety, but occasionally one runs across a group or an artist who's music really...

    Capstan Original Navy Flake (Blue)

I smoked Capstan Blue flake, 50 gm tins, from the early 1980s to about 2000 when it became unavailable in the US. I could not find an acceptable all day smoke so I liked as much, so quit smoking for about 20 years. My wife found some Capstan Blue Flake and ordered me a tin. It was close to what...

Cornell & Diehl - Bright Virginia Ribbon

I miss the bags of Bull Durham. I always kept one under the front seat of my car and when it started raining there was nothing like a bag of Bull Durham to remove the road film from the windshield! Worked better than any windshield washing liquid! I never smoked it in a pipe but tried to roll a...

Inordinately Tight Stem: What To Do (in the long term)?

This is a method we used for years in the smoke shops in the 1980s. It's amazing what a little graphite from a pencil will do to a tight fitting tendon! I've done it many times and I don't recall it ever failing.

Why Algerian Briar was Highly Regarded

I have one Algerian Briar which is all that is stamped on the pipe. It's a small Canadian, carved finish with a dark stain but it is an excellent smoke! Consistently a good Virginia or va/per pipe.
