***What Are You Smoking, February 2023?***

The last 3 days I've been enjoying Mallard Flake with perique. It's a great smoke, a little drier than Capstan Blue flake. It smokes down to a fine white ash. Great Smoke! It probably will not replace my Capstan Blue flake anytime soon, but I find it to be a good all day smoke.

    Beeswax Polishing

lower speed than most bench grinders. Most bench grinders operated about 3,600 RPM but my fastest buffers are about half that, 1725 RPM. The one that I use for buffing with carnauba wax is geared down to about 700 RPM. The fast buffers really generate a lot of friction even with carnauba wax and...

    Tight stem.

I have always used graphite quite successfully on tight tendons. A number two pencil or softer works very well. I run it up and down the tendon and even in the mortise. Even super tight stems will work very nicely with a little graphite.

    Beeswax Polishing

I use hard carnauba wax and applied with a loose Muslim buffing wheel. I don't apply it heavily and wipe off the excess with a soft cloth. I use the same method for certain types of wood knife handles, usually very hard woods like desert Ironwood, African Blackwood, ebony and certain of the...

    Zippo Maintenance

Zippos are amazing and is most of you know they last pretty much a lifetime. I had a friend who purchased one at the PX when he was in the Army before he shipped overseas in World War II. He spent two and a half years in A POW Camp and still manage to hang on to his lighter. He carried the same...

    Zippo pipe lighter wick

I haven't used a fluid Zippo lighter in probably 30 years or more, except when I'm fishing. When you're out in the boat on a windy lake, it's hard to beat a Zippo fluid pipe lighter. I usually kept my wick about 2/3 the length of the hole. My favorite lighter is a Zippo butane pipe lighter...

Best "Bulk" Navy Flake/Straight VA Flake

Just getting back into pipe smoking after a 20-year hiatus, many of these bulk Blends are new to me but the best one I have smoked so far has been PS Bullseye flake. It smokes very clean and dry. Great flavor and I love the perique.

    Fixed bend but now look!

Using a Bic lighter to heat the stem followed by a wet paper towel really works! It was about 90% effective, but I didn't have any toothpaste only denture adhesive. So I used 3M polishing paper up to 8000 Grit. It worked pretty well, but I think it will work even better as I practice and get...

Moving From English Blends to Pure Virginias

I find the lighter virginias are more like cigarettes and they do tend to burn hotter. My favorite tobacco even after 20 years of not smoking and recently returning, is still Capstan Blue Flake. It's strong enough to be flavorful but doesn't knock you on the floor either.

Thank you for your quick reply! I will give this method a try.

Interesting method. How do you do it? Do you use a lighter and lightly singe? Please get more details.

    Secrets Revealed: Bulk Blends

Having managed a small chain of three pipe shops for about 10 years and having worked in two or three other stores, they mostly just renamed bulk tobaccos from Lane Ltd, PS, and McClellan. But this was during the 1980s, I know the industry has changed substantially since then. McClellan for...

What Would You Do? Last Bowl...

I can only speak for the industry as I knew it in the 1980s and early 1990s. There were some blends that we carried that we mixed ourselves. 90% of the Blends we carried were straight from the bag and renamed to fit the personality of the store and its customers. Lane limited was a was one of...

    Fixed bend but now look!

I have not heard of juma, what is it, and where can I have such a stem made. I have a Stanwell Golden King that needs a new stem. Thank you!

    Fixed bend but now look!

I understand what you're saying about buffing the edges and rounding them. I do this on my pipes and though it may be thought anathema I have even sanded down some of the sharp corners on bits because they were not comfortable in my mouth. If a pipe is not comfortable in my mouth, I won't smoke...

    Fixed bend but now look!

I use 3M polishing paper to remove the tarnish from a very tarnished stem. It ranges from 30 microns to 1 micron in coarseness. Unlike sandpaper, it does not vary in-depth of the abrasive which makes for a much smoother finish without deep scratches. 30 microns is roughly equivalent to 400 Grit...

    Greetings from Montana Territory

Welcome from the beautiful Willamette Valley Oregon! If I were to move away from Oregon, probably because of the politics, Montana is high on my list of places I might like to move. I have a grandson up around Troy and our daughter and kids lived in Libby and Helena for many years. My wife and I...
