My most favorite pipe of the year

Ingo Garbe is my most favorite pipemaker. I think the classic shape of this one is absolutely gorgeous. If I had the money, I would fly to where the pipe is, inspect it more closely and buy it. Approx $1500 is a steal for this one (in my opinion) For those people who want to see the other sides...

Dunhill Bruyere - Help From The Experts Needed

Pipes with the "MAR.9.15" US reference together with "PAT.APP.FOR" date from 1918-1920. The date suffix was not introduced until late 1921. This may help I reckon 1918-1920.

James Upshall Pipes - A Discussion

I would really like georged to comment on this piece. I do know that the original length of the shank was longer, possibly by as much as an inch or longer still.By the way seadog, my name is Ken!

    Savroy's Agryll Restoration

No, I think it was JJ Fox. Mr Anderson's name only came to me when writing this!

James Upshall Pipes - A Discussion

reply to seadog. Wow, what happened? I am very open-minded when it comes to replacing a different mouthpiece on an Upshall. I am sure that many collectors would agree with me when I say that Charatan produced the better bowls and Dunhill produced a far better mouthpiece. Unfortunatley for me, by...

    Savroy's Agryll Restoration

Nice one! Savorys were a tobacco store in Oxford and Dunhill used to supply them with pipes under their name. I think they closed down before I could sell Upshalls or Tilshead pipes to them. I think my memory is fading - did I sell pipes to Savorys? I think Dunhill insisted that they did not...

2 Charatans Ken Barnes Would Like

I tend to agree with George. As far as I recall Charatan did not use this style of 'flared' mouthpiece. On Supreme quality they would normally have fitted a DC saddle (post 1962-3)or a taper bit. This is by no way a judgement, merely an observation and the pipe is such a great example of the...

2 Charatans Ken Barnes Would Like

Really great pipes. The Supreme looks very familiar to me for some reason. I am sure that this one was shaped by Joan Nicholson and I reckon it dates from the early to mid 1970s. Lovely piece. I am wondering if it has possibly had a replacement mouthpiece fitted?

Pipe Porn - Pre-Lane Charatan and GBD PixAxe

Great cutty. Barry Jones told me the other day that the person who sand-blasted the Charatans in the 1950s was Johnny Mahoney and every time he had a bunch of pipes to sandblast, Mr Charatan would say to him "heavy on the bowl and light on the shank".

    My Only Charatan Pipe

What a lovely classical shape Executive - looks like an early piece and in beautiful condition. I notice it has a very subtle bevel on the inside rim of the bowl- it's a Peach!

    What Shape is this Charatan?

This is an early piece. The reverse side of the shank has no stamp marks ie handmade city of London etc. I think that this may be a 1960s pipe.

    What Shape is this Charatan?

Barry Jones made the first 'cup and saucer' freehand in 1959. He told me that Mr Charatan loved the shape. Barry was working in the sand papering dept at the time with Joan Nicholson, who was his teacher in sand papering. He made his first one in his lunch hour when he saw a giant bent...

Charatan Authentic Pipes: Can Their Image be Rehabilitated?

I seem to recall the Authentic quality when I worked at the factory in the 1970s. I think it was one of those qualities that sort of slipped away rather like the Rarity at that time. When I read the Ivy Ryan's article for the first time 12 months ago, I struggled to find any real commonality...

1964 Dunhill Bruyere 721 'Scandinavian Bulldog'

This 51161 has amazing birdseye grain. Another thing I like is the most beautiful, harmonious marriage of mouthpiece and bowl. My personal wish would be to refurbish it to its original 'root' finish so that the grain would 'come out of hiding' and completely blow me away.

    Is this a dunhill patent?

Beefeater33 Looking at the stamping from the Dunhill sold last month,it could have been a stamp used for another dunhill product like pipe pouch/leather goods. the mouthpiece on this one is nothing to do with dunhill and the shape does not look typical either.
