    Is this another Dunhill fake?

Any smooth Dunhill that has a "shell" stamping is a fake. Shell refers to Dunhill's sandblast process
  2. kenbarnes

    Is this another Dunhill fake?

.... also I am sure that Dunhill never fitted moulded mouthpieces on their pipes, nor did they have such a spot in those days or any days for that matter.

    Is this another Dunhill fake?

This un-smoked Patent 'Dunhill' is not stamped correctly. Any feedback would be welcome...

I Need Help With This Comoy's.....Please

Seadog:I personally would never strip and sand an old collectable pipe unless the customer brought it to us as a special request because he did not like the finish etc. I remember only one occasion when a collector managed to locate Barry Jones (after he left Charatan) and asked him to strip a...

    Cheap Dunhill Pipe Anybody?

I saw that one and laughed. I am sure that the seller has no idea and it just happened to be in that box. Another one that confused me was this Dunhill patent with a 'blown out bowl' (two large cracks down the bowl) which sold for £68.00. Did the 'successful' bidder actually see the last photo...

James Upshall Pipes - A Discussion

As this Tilshead Natural is not stained in any way, you can wipe the bowl with something like pure alcohol (or near enough) which will clean the surface dirt from the bowl and mouthpiece and then apply some natural non- silicone beeswax on a J-cloth and polish the pipe. It will give you more of...

James Upshall Pipes - A Discussion

Oh, what a beautiful, beautiful Tilshead Natural. This pipe really inspires me as one of the true classical free-hands that we were making in the late 70s early eighties. This pipe was turned and shaped by Barry Jones, the craftsman and this has a real late 60s early 70s Charatan freehand style...

    Preben Holm Ben Wades

I have one 'original' Ben Wade Danish on ebay at the moment that seems to me to be one of those from the mid 70s. I think it was made before the '100' series, 'Walnut' series etc. What do the specialists reckon...

Ashton ELX pebble grain Canadian estate, $200, is it worth it?

Fascinating! It looks like an early one to me, although I knew Bill better than I knew his pipes.

    A Dunhill Primer?

I am only beginning to learn about Dunhill pipes in greater depth and I regularly use this link. The examples shown very often have a valuation of the pipe under it and the date the valuation was made. http://www.pipephil.eu/logos/en/dunhill/cledat-en1.html

    A $16k Dunhill

Now that is an interesting point. I have never seen one that has been regularly smoked. I do think that this lacquer( resin from a certain tree) is incredibly hard wearing. I would imagine that they would possibly use 'branch wood' briar as it has very little grain variation or flaws. I...

James Upshall Pipes - A Discussion

these 6 pipes belong to a friend of mine who smokes them all regularly. So inspiring to see them in such good condition after many years. I think one thing he does is rotating them and let them cool right down - leave them for a long period before filling them with another bowlful...

James Upshall Pipes - A Discussion

No worries dime! I truly appreciate the patience that was shown to me when I first attempted to load a photo on this thread..... "what a palaver on the Costa Brava". This is a really fine pipe. I think it was made in the 1980s as it has the simple engraving on it with no FH or size numbers. I...

James Upshall Pipes - A Discussion

seadog: well, it looks a lot better and I don't know if I mentioned it before, but I think the stamping dates it to about 1982 - before we started using an engraving machine. It has all the style of a Charatan/Upshall (Charup) I am sure that georged would give it his best with regards to the...

Great Charatan's Supreme was on eBay

Yes, I like that one! Your Charatan, however, is a hand model rather than a catalogue shape. A very nice special albeit in need of some mouthpiece de-ox?

Great Charatan's Supreme was on eBay

This one above has a replacement mouthpiece fitted because the curve on this mouthpiece is awful. Charatan did not have the best mouthpieces but the way they bent the mouthpieces was fine. This one would not have left the factory with a 'hooked' bend on it. When some repairers heat the...

    A $16k Dunhill

De La Concha! There's a memory there, 6th Avenue- Avenue of the Americas? I often wondered what happened to Lionel Melindi. We used to sell some high grade Upshalls there. The mouthpiece on this one is not very Dunhillesque. The mouthpiece would also look better with a defined crescent lip.
