I am looking to get schooled on Dunhill pipes, some good info for buying and evaluating the pipes, what makes a Dunhill pipe valuable in the marketplace, what's good and not so good, what years are best, etc. Is there a good source? Perhaps this has been covered here before, any links or info is appreciated. I have one Dunhill pipe, a 1961 Tanshell that smokes well and is light with a slender stem that is nice. However, I feel generally ignorant about these pipes, and would like to be more knowledgable before I acquire another one. Any pointers?

Thanks!

Use ebay's "completed transactions" check box to see what they actually sold for.
After watch it for a while you'll have a fair idea of what matters and what doesn't.
Above all, remember that for ALL collectables, pipes or otherwise, Condition Is King. (Rarity is nice, but worthless if condition is bad.)

The most valuable Dunhill pipes are the DR grades usually. Occasionally a very rare pipe that is a one off will come up. I personally like older Shell models, but the blasts still vary greatly, and one blast may be worth twice as much as another, it's all in the eye of the beholder. Age does have a good bit of affect on value, usually the older the more expensive. Older Dunhill's with Cumberland stems are very collectible. I like the horn stem Dunhill's as well, usually from the war years 1940-45 and are somewhat uncommon.

Here is a page with some pics of a very Fantastic Dunhill collection. I almost forgot about the LC, probably the most highly sought after Dunhill shape.

I am only beginning to learn about Dunhill pipes in greater depth and I regularly use this link. The examples shown very often have a valuation of the pipe under it and the date the valuation was made.

I've seen my fair share of nice looking Dunhills on the interwebs but i can't see myself buying one in the foreseeable future. It's interesting how a small block of wood, and an old one at that, can generate so much economic worth. If you want one I say go for it!
