Can anyone date this Ye Olde Wood?

Yes, I was concerned about the darkening and for £200 forget it. What I sometimes do with UK listings is wait 'til it doesn't sell and make an offer, after having asked loads of questions and seen more photos etc. I would have asked for a photo of the mouthpiece separated, the inside of the...

Beautiful Upshall pipe on the bay.

ssjones The 'S' grade was quite a 'common' grade although I seem to remember that our U.S. agents did not go wild about this quality, possibly the finish was not in fashion at the time or they felt the 'P' grade light walnut was a better seller. It is quite funny that certain countries we sold...

Can anyone date this Ye Olde Wood?

Yes doctorbob, that can be a drawback to this forum. Maybe a P.M. to sablebrush52 would have been more helpful. I was tempted to buy it on a gut feeling as it is a U.K. only listing, but I may wait and see. A picture of the tenon etc could reveal more. If I had lots of money, I would have...

Can anyone date this Ye Olde Wood?

Thanks sablebrush52. I was also wondering whether this original mouthpiece is amber, amberoid or amberine or another type of synthetic amber. It looks quite like amber but I am no specialist. I also thought the case could supply some clues. I think the grain on this one is full and fine.

Can anyone date this Ye Olde Wood?

just wondering if anyone can date this pipe? Calling Jesse.... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vintage-Barlings-Make-Ye-Olde-Wood-Estate-Pipe-with-original-case-/292012805799?hash=item43fd51cea7:g:95IAAOSwLEtYjNfJ#shpCntId

James Upshall Pipes - A Discussion

gnesiohamartolo First of all thank you for your post. I found it very interesting and have gained a better perspective on how all this can impact on pipe smokers/ collectors. As I have mentioned before, I know that Barry Jones felt really de-valued when asked to strip pipes like Dr. Plumb and...

Beautiful Upshall pipe on the bay.

pagan the dollar is much stronger against the £ pound these days. More like $131. It is a good time to buy English pipes in the U.S. at the moment. Yes, nice 'authentic' 'S' grade.

5 estate pipes, a mixed bag and some unknowns

The middle one in the first picture is a Charatan 1970-1980, the Mansell shape (named after the street where Charatan had its factory) shape no. 213.

    Is this another Dunhill fake?

Well done Al. Great taste! I am glad it went to a good home. I placed a bid on it at an earlier stage as I knew it had the curved stamping. Nice piece!

    Is this another Dunhill fake?

I telephoned ebay uk this morning and highlighted my concerns about this fake. I was informed that one course of action was for ebay to approach the manufacturer for feedback on its authenticity. There are also outcomes to this complaint. One would be a warning to the buyer, another is...

    Is this another Dunhill fake?

Jay, that is a very good point 'home of steel'. I wonder who has the gall to get a filled pipe and a cheap one with varnish/lacquer applied and no knowledge of pipes and amidst all the feedback he is receiving about the pipe being a fake (it's now at over £100), his home is the 'home of steal'...

    Really? a Upshaw xx pipe

The Pipe Monk Karen Ezrati, who is the widow of Moty, has the James Upshall name although production stopped quite a while ago. The factory/workshop still has a lot of the original machines and tools still there, which she apparently wants to sell. The tradition of hand made English pipes is...

    Really? a Upshaw xx pipe

Jensen: I am really moved reading this message. I still have one of these brochures and immediately wanted to photograph it for this thread but it is covered with hand written ex-factory prices for each quality which I do not want to exhibit at this time. Yes, 14 Cross Keys Chequer was my...

    Really? a Upshaw xx pipe

I am quite saddened by that as I heard this too and to think he had one of the best craftsman around and apparently some really good quality plateaux (which was sold as a job lot some four months ago) and chose to strip and refinish cheap pipes. Why? I really do not understand the logic.

    Really? a Upshaw xx pipe

Yes, this Upshall is marked XX due to the length of shank. This was after my time with James Upshall and I don't think it is a very helpful stamp to put on a sandblasted pipe. XL EXL or something like that would have been more helpful. It could be that it was the quickest way to mark the shank...

    Is this another Dunhill fake?

thank you for that dmcmdk- wow, what an article. I did know that collector quite well and met with his family for dinner etc in the 1980s. It saddens me that people can go to extraordinary lengths to obtain what is pretty unobtainable and people who definitely don't need the money but the...

    Is this another Dunhill fake?

I am tempted to send him the link to this thread so that he can see what people are saying, people who may well be more knowledgeable on this subject! Is it really worth having my image tarnished for a few pounds/dollars?

    Is this another Dunhill fake?

This guy replied to my email drawing my attention to the disclaimer he has at the bottom of his listing that reads Due to a small amount of enquiry as to the pipes authenticity I feel compelled to add this disclaimer. What I have offered so far is my opinion. I urge everyone interested in the...

    Is this another Dunhill fake?

Thanks bentbob, I am learning everyday. I know that Charatan, Upshall and other pipe makers used an old family business making dies called Bonzer. Nowadays it is oh so different. I sent this ebayer a message just now Regrettably it is not the 'real deal' but in fact a fake. I have noticed...
