I telephoned ebay uk this morning and highlighted my concerns about this fake. I was informed that one course of action was for ebay to approach the manufacturer for feedback on its authenticity. There are also outcomes to this complaint. One would be a warning to the buyer, another is cancelling the listing and the third I cannot remember. I also explained to ebay how to access the link to this thread which was noted.

I was also told that they would take this matter seriously and reporting this was the 'right thing to do'.

Anyway, I have done my bit and feel better for doing so.

Hey, some good did come out of this thread - listed at the bottom of the Ebay ad for the suspect pipe was this 1962 Barlings Sandblast bulldog. Jesse confirmed that this was the real deal (and gave me that specific date, cool eh?) I won the auction a few minutes ago. I've been looking for the right Barlings for quite a while and this one rang all of my bells & whistles.
Now, I have to check with George D for tips on working around that hateful stem stamp..

Thanks beef, that is all Jesse. I has assumed it was '62 to '64ish based on the arched logo and four digit shape code. But Jesse goes as far to say it was made between the Spring and Fall of 1962, the only time that combination was used (no TVF I assume helps?). It's unfortunate that Jesse couldn't narrow it down to the specific month and day, but I'll take what I can get.....

Thanks Al. That Jesse is a walking Barling encyclopedia!! Good info, I didn't know that about the arched logo/4 digit code.

Looking forward to more pics when you get her in hand and cleaned up!.............

I'm pretty excited to win this one, and quite frankly didn't expect to. I think the UK seller and auction ending at noon helped me out (and a seller with little experience). Of course all will be revealed when it is delivered..

Yeah, it's pretty cool to have that kind of resource. I've restored a number of pipes lately, but no keeper for me. This one gets a prominent spot on the rack (and my only Barling's)

Well done Al. Great taste! I am glad it went to a good home. I placed a bid on it at an earlier stage as I knew it had the curved stamping. Nice piece!

Hi Al,,
I'm glad that you snagged that one! Don't worry about the Barling cross. George has a stamp. These particular Barlings with the Block lettered "Barling's Make" in a smaller size and the revised 4 digit model code, appear in the 150th Anniversary Catalog.

My copy of that catalog includes a price list, dated to June 1962, that references the new model numbering system. Figuring that production of the catalog must have taken a month or more back then, and these pipes were made as early as May or April of 1962, and possibly earlier. They were in production as late as late September, based on a letter from Barling's new American distributor to its dealer network, which describes the stampings, block Barling's Make with the new model numbering system.
The completely new nomenclature appears in the Dealers Catalog that was published in November of 1962. So that gives me a range for dating these specific pipes.

Al, very nice. Those '62 Barling's are actually the easiest pipes to date, and excellent smokers! :)

What's left of it! Very nice sandblast though, I could quite easily fall in love with that one myself.

Jay.

Well done mr Jones. I was waiting to bid on that, saw it shoot past £50 & left it alone. Very much looking forward to seeing the 'after' photos.

I see its from Llanelli (west wales) making it the only Welsh barling I know of.

Simon.

Thanks Jesse, that's fascinating information. I'll check with George to see if he can restamp the logo.
@simong: Also interesting, as my Great-Grandfather immigrated from Wales (but which city is unknown).

@ walt24, I dont want to sound like a smart ass but how many people are there that have only 1 prior bid with ebay? Now I am sure there are new people being added all the time BUT it has already been established this guy is up to no good with the pipe. I would not be surprised if he opened another account or had a friend in order to bid up the price of his pipes. Shill bidding. We will never know as ebay hides the ID of bidders now but it just seems odd to me.
