Great Charatan's Supreme was on eBay

Thanks for that georged Feelings will definitely come up when Barry sees this lot. I love the square shanks that Joan & Barry were making at this time!

Great Charatan's Supreme was on eBay

georged: that would be brilliant! I am sure my father met with Carl on one or two occasions,it is such a small world in the pipe world and I very much look forward to seeing some more photos!

Great Charatan's Supreme was on eBay

Oooooooooooooooooooooohhhhhh - lovely 'centrefold'. I have never seen this collection before. I will definitely show Barry these when I next see him. Yes oldgeezersmoker, Ed Kolpin senior and Junior sold some of the real high grade Charatans in the original Tinderbox store (their brainchild)in...

Great Charatan's Supreme was on eBay

Duke Street Irregular. This one is a 'Reuben Special'! What a beautiful craggy blast. As I have mentioned before, Barry recalls the words of Mr Charatan to Johnny Mahoney (the sand blaster in the 50s) "Mr Mahoney, heavy on the bowl and light on the shank". Lovely example.

New Additions. Charatan, Astley, Stanwell, Nording.

The Charatan Trafalgar (71 X) is an old one. The ones from the 70s were stamped either 171X or 371X depending on the group 1 or group 3 size, (the X being for a saddle mouthpiece). I think that this pipe was repaired at one time by Charatan (new mouthpiece) and during the frazing process the...

Great Charatan's Supreme was on eBay

pipestud: I have two 'holy grail' Charatans from the Frderick Charatan era (around 1904 I think) which your guy from China may be really interested in. These two pipes, in my opinion, are the rarest Charatans I have ever seen and for that matter have never seen on any of the online secialist...

oldgeezersmoker: I have enclosed some pics from that 1951 catalogue which you may find interesting.

Great Charatan's Supreme was on eBay

My instinct is that the pouch did not come with this pipe. When people say 'Lane era' I am imagining that they know that Lane started importing Charatan pipes in 1955. I have a 1951 Charatan catalogue which says that the highest quality that they were producing at the time (and through the...

Example of a shoddy Dunhill fake?

I was half hoping that this was a rare stamping mistake until I saw the mouthpiece! Did Dunhill ever make a shape like this? I realise now that it must be a fake as the stampings would be on the front and reverse side of the shank- unless someone re- sanded their shell and refinished the pipe...

British Pipe Porn - Pre-Lane Charatan Dublin

What a lovely craggy 33 deluxe. Looks like a hand- cut mouthpiece? I have a 1951 Charatan catalogue here which gives the actual weight of each shape in grams & oz as well as the length in cms & inches. These however only relate to the weight of smooth pipes and this one (shape 33) says 30 grms...

    Intersting James Upshall Freehand

Oh, what a great shape! A real CHUPS (Charatan Upshall)! Made by Barry Jones (who can mistake that?.)This piece was made after my time at Tilshead (after 1989). The original theme to James Upshall that we all agreed on was 'The Tradition Continues' and this was to reflect that the tradition of...

Anyone know who made this pipe?

The hallmarks look very genuine to me. I did do some research before I liisted it on ebay and did not come up with anything. Why I bought it originally, some years ago, was because the shape looked so 'handmade'and I wanted to handle it and find out who made it. I did clean it up a little and...

    Interesting Ebay Auctions (11/27) - Sasieni 8 Dot's/Charatan Coronation

I am quite saddened by this Coronation. I can almost hear Herman Lane demanding more high grade freehands in that stern voice of his. More high grades!!! This can happen and to make matters worse the run of plateau starts to lack the grain of the previous batch. Then, 'when push comes to shove'...

My most favorite pipe of the year

Wow, I did not see this one on the site. This one has some seriously tight and wonderful grain. The birdseye top of this one is breathtakingly STUNNING.

Weaknesses for British pipes. new pipes.

That 'P' grade is a lovely pipe. So in the James Upshall style. The Rhodesian is also beautifully shaped, I love the thin shank on this one. It gives it that truly hand-made look.

My most favorite pipe of the year

What a lovely shape. Ingo Garbe's styling especially around the 'kneck' of the bowl is what I love best about his pipes. Lovely pouch as well!

My most favorite pipe of the year

Yes, I love the finish. It is like the top coat of a Charatan Distinction. The Distinction had a background spirit stain of black, burnt into the grain and then stripped off, leaving a darker grained background (to bring out the grain as it where). This one has no real back ground stain as the...
