    Is this a dunhill patent?

Does anyone know if dunhill made a patent pipe stamped dunhill with a small d +pat no. 41751022 last digits unreadable I would be really interested to know. This is the ebay link http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DUNHILL-PATENT-SMOKERS-PIPE-/302114054009?hash=item4657669f79:g:uJkAAOSwHMJYCicQ

Holy Grail Find - Charatan "Countryman"

or perhaps Milton (Milltown) was the name before they introduced the trading name of Millville (Mill Ville/Town)? The 'carved from real briar' is a little bewildering though, some cheaper Italian pipes used to say 'real briar'. that is certainly not an English type description to find on a...

Holy Grail Find - Charatan "Countryman"

Or it was one of the old Charatan bowls that Millville may have had when the factory closed. Remember that the Countryman only came in a selected quality (straight grain 'round the top of the bowl). This one may have fallen short of this quality.

Holy Grail Find - Charatan "Countryman"

I think that the 'Selected deluxe' was indeed made by Dan Tennyson in the 1950s. I am not sure when Reuben introduced the Tan sandblast, I am sure that orlandofurioso knows. Barry told me the other day that Dan had been working with Reuben since the 1930s. I saw this 'Milton' on ebay and was...

    James Upshall "Old England" Grade

Yes, there were a few Upshalls that Desmond Sautter wanted his initials on. These are upshalls from the early eighties I think (poss 1982-3). We only did a limited edition of these pipes for him. I think it was at the time when Sautter was selling more James Upshall pipes in his 3 shops (Mount...

Old Dunhill Date Question (calling the Duke Street Irregulars)

As I understand it, Alfred Dunhill realised that he was paying too much for pipes made by Charatan and, at that time, Joel Sasieni was working for Charatan and Alfred Dunhill 'lured' Joel away and he then made Dunhill pipes for Alfred in his first factory (for a while), before setting up on his...

Old Dunhill Date Question (calling the Duke Street Irregulars)

Frederick Charatan & Son supplied pipes to Alfred Dunhill before 1910.

1933 Dunhill LB with Vernon Tenon

I think the Dunhill LB is great. I also think that George is one of the finest restorers - in fact the finest restorer of pipes that I have ever come across. What beautiful work- supremely masterful! I also saw a mouthpiece that George had made for a James Upshall X or XX (can't remember...

Is This the Most Heavily Filled Pipe in the World?

Hi, I was just browsing ebay and found this old Ben Wade and was shocked when I saw the photo of the other side of the bowl. Has anyone ever seen so much filling on one side of a pipe? I almost want to bid for it as this,in my opinion, is a rarity...

    Yet more obscure estate finds.

The Tyro pipe just reminds me of Raganella and how they carved the bowl and after the mouthpiece was frazed, they would use a thickish twist drill and run it up and down the shank like that without giving too much thought about blending it to the existing type of carving. It was just a thought...

    Yet more obscure estate finds.

quoteI's guess that the Agincourt pipe is a Charatan sub-brand------looks like it to me because it resembles their large pot, even the flat saddle stem looks like Charatan. I think londonmake is correct. it is a Charatan second, but I do not think it is a catalogue shape. to me, this looks like...

Great New Article on Charatan, Upshall and Ken Barnes

I am really touched by the feedback that I am reading. I met up with Barry Jones two weeks ago with other long lost friends Pete Siegel and his wife Debbie. This was such an emotional time, all in one week. The four of us talked for about 4 hours on the times we had and it seemed to me that the...

One for the deep pocketed Barling collector.

I heard that the final frenzy was between an Italian and a Chinese collector. It will be winging its way to China!
