smeigs, are those reeds you use for stems? What is the base plug, I can't quite make it out.

@onepyrotec.. yea those are reeds that I use but they are not bamboo, they are a similar type of plant though.. and the gold thing you see on the bottom is my stamp with my brand logo made of wax that I drip onto the bottom of my pipes as my signature. And no, the wax does not melt when you smoke it haha

A few weeks ago a gent that I've been doing some refurb work for contacted me to see if I would be interested in making a Morta pipe for him, and of course I was! I did have some reservations as I've heard that this stuff can be hard to work with. It wasn't bad at all,actually to me it was a lot like working with Mulberry. The block was only 3710 years old,older stuff may be harder to work?

The shank extension is briar and the stem was cut from German Ebonite. Yesterday I bought another block from the same batch so I can make one for myself!

Nice looker Ed. How hard is it to attach the briar shank extension?

Onepyro,it's not hard.There's a couple of ways to do it.I turned a tenon on the end of the briar and the shank has a regular mortise, then epoxied the two together. Then it is worked as if it is one piece.The briar has a mortise for the stem.

Is carving your own pipe as difficult as it seems? And if I'm going to do it should I buy one of those "carve your own pipe blocks" from P&C or CupO'Joes? Or is there some other place I should get my materials? And what all tools are needed?

I buy from Steve Norse his ebay store is vt_freehand. Steve is very friendly and will make sure to help you get what you are looking for.
