Walt, I love all your pipes but the one my eye keeps getting drawn to is that spikey number at the top and center! How do you even hold that while you smoke!?

All the pipes are very cool. I have no artistic ability. It is nice to see the creativity of others.

beautiful pipes all!

I have made a couple but i dont know how to post the pictures.

why is it easier to carve a pipe from a block of wood than it is to post a picture online?

sigh...

Thank you sablebrush52... I'm really satisfied with how end up looking and how good it smokes, the only downside is the weight but I don't clench on my stems so its not a problem.

Nice job! Did you use that belt sander to do any shaping? I just got a 1"X42" belt sander that a friend built for me. Looking forward to using it.

yes, i cut away bulk with saw and file and then used belt sander to get basically to shape. Careful not to go to harsh on the grit, it cuts fast!

Definitely one of my favorite threads ever! You guys all have done really awesome work. I used to do a lot of wood-working with hand tools and I'm starting to feel inspired. Anybody have any recommendations for something cheaper than briar?

Just cough up! if you are going to invest your time and sweat into it, then it may as well age nicely!

although for a practise run you could use a block of any old thing, providing it was not going to be smoked...

My two most recent creations, I have been wanting a Castello 55 but they are beyond my means, so I dicided to make something similarly shaped myself, I also am a big fan of the Dunhill Don shape so I made myself one with my own twist...

This fat lil guy is a great pocket piece. Good and stout. Was just goofin off. Decided to see how my eye was for just freehand symmetry. Then found the most beautiful straight grain inside a 80 year old block I had. Nice quiet night in the shop so was figured I should just follow it. Acrylic swirl rod on both for stems. Both could use more polish but I was just goofin off. Thought to share. Thank her for the photos.

Finally finished hacking out my first pipe.
Pre-Drilled briar block

firstpipea_zpsf3c70514.jpg

Rough shaping with 60 grit sanding disc then smoothed out with 80 grit sand paper.

Sanded to 400 grit then applied U.S.M.C. Black, then sanded again.

Applied British Tan, then sanded again. I ALMOST stopped here.

Applied yellow, and sanded again, and again, and again...all the way to 12,000 grit.

Holy Mother! The pipes here are so appealing.
Why did I click on this thread? I want to do something like this, but my crafting skills are somewhere between "crappy" and "really crappy". :|
